Treebolts revisited

If you preset in the spring, the holes may grow in. I have to re-drill my trees every season. With summer being to growing season I expect that is when they fill in the most. It is easier to re-drill a hole than drill a fresh hole though.

10-4, I didn’t consider that. Thanks for the advice. I think I’ll just order the ez kut instead of trying to do it on the cheap.

As for the bolts, I just got a quote from one of the wholesalers I buy material from. He’s got them (3/8”-16X6”) at $0.87 a piece (CAD). I imagine you guys would be able to get a decent price from a wholesaler in your area as well.

I don't remember who said they use a cordless and only use the hand drill for clearing holes that need clearing. My question is, what's the smallest cordless drill that will get the job done on preset drilling and how many trees can you prep on one charge?

I posted my 12vlt drill earlier in this thread. It's pretty small and can last a good while

That's where I saw it. Thanks. I looked back but didn't find it. Was it a Ryobi 12v or something? Do you remember what it cost?
I have a cordless drill I've taken to the field a number of times but I don't like to. It's a tank.

The hand drill is quiet :) gets tiring though (depending upon the tree).
I use a pretty small drill that isn't horribly loud. Cheap Ryobi 9v

How many trees can you prep on one battery?

Had this drill laying around the house so I put it to use. Great power for a 12volt and drilled 2 tree and the battery indicator still says full. Super light and compact as well.

Does it have a clip on it to hang it off your belt or pocket?

yep, about 2 7/8" for the bit. that leaves me about 3 and 1/8" inches to stand on with a 6" bolt. Justsomedude, are you using 6 or 8-inch bolts with yours? I might go with 8-inch bolts for trees with thicker bark.

I've had trouble finding grade 8 3/8" bolts longer than 6".

I used 5" bolts for near 20 years before switching to 6" bolts. I wear size 12 boots and have no issues.

I got my bolts on ebay.

Did you find 8" there? I looked a few weeks ago and found 6" were the longest. I just want some 8" for some super thick bark trees I'm wanting to hunt where I have to drill in the deepest part of the bark cracks. It doesn't leave much bolt sticking out beyond the outer part of the bark.

Oh sorry I didn't get that. Mine are 6 inches.

I preset bolts. Never on a hunt. I use a short cord looped around the drill handle and clip to the tether on an old retired HSS safety vest. It hangs behind me while I climb. Plenty of length to reach and drill and just let it hang while moving up to the next. Bolts in one vest pocket and a spare battery in the other. The vest is used only for setup. Keeps the saddle from getting sweat soaked.

That works

Ten bolts high put's my lock-on platform (haven't received my Kestrel yet) about 20'. I also drill for a bolt for my stand to rest just above for safety backup. But, I usually have 15 bolts in my pouch, for just in case I need to get higher or I drop one. Speaking of pouches. I've went through several but the one that I've been using for the past few years is the best and very affordable too. Check it out I think y'all will be impressed.

Are you using this pouch to hold and carry your bolts and hand drill??

I used the ezkut drill system this past week in sub below weather with a kestral. Way better then tree pegs or sticks cause after sitting in below zero weather for three hrs the last thing you want to do is touch steal.. Simply grab the bolts on the way down and put them in your fanny pack. Setting up was really easy with the hand drill. I wasn't going that high maybe 8 or 9 bolts. I took my time and it only took about 20 minutes to set up a fresh tree with no noise. That's what I love about this system. It's noise free and efficient, no bulk. Deer were constantly moving all day and had several encounters while setting up.

That sounds awesome. In the cold weather it was taking me only slightly less time to one stick up the tree. I bought an ATC to rappel out of the tree because it was unbearable doing the one stick method all the way down. I'm really excited to pick up an EZ kut and give it a whirl this spring!

I’m pretty sure I mentioned it before, but it is WAY easier to drill when you hang from a tether instead of from a linesman belt.

Why is that?

With a linesman belt, your feet will have to support almost your full weight. Your feet will also be 20 or so inches apart that puts you at weird angles. Talk about fatigue.....
Hanging from a tether, your saddle handles almost all of the weight. You only use your leg muscles to adjust your position. You don’t get much fatigue that way.
