using only baselayers?

I have outerwear that I like (non scent lok) but I'd like to give the activated carbon stuff a try. I would buy the head cover, gloves and top/bottom light weight base layers. Assuming I keep my outer gear scent free, would using just the base layers work? I would add scent blocker pants once my current ones give up the ghost, but I'm not sure i'd be wasting my time with only light base layers, my non-activated carbon outerwear and rubber knee boots. I would always have a jacket of some sort on, and pants obviously :)

I did search here but didn't find anything definitive...
