I have a hunt coming up next weekend in ND. There is a pretty good chance that if I shoot anything, (fingers crossed) it will be in full velvet. Have any of you guys dealt with this or do you have any advice? I have seen articles on everything from freeze drying, to embalming, to caping and letting the blood drain out.

I probably won't get two chances at a deer like this so I don't want to screw it up.....

I had a full velvet 8pt done in a European mount a few years ago. I just got the head off and in the freezer as quick as possible, then, the next morning took it to the taxidermist. It took a long time before I got it back, he said the rack had to be soaked in some type of chemical for a long time(unsure of specifics). I should've asked what method he used just so I would know. I'll include a pic just because I'm proud of it and I like to show it off even though he's no monster haha, good luck on your hunt!

If your using a Taxidermist out there, get it to him as fast as you can. Also be sure to not touch the velvet with hands and keep them covered. Pretty much anything that touches it can damage it. Need to take care transporting it. Might need to carry whole deer out and protect it while in back of truck. There is another option were they strip off the velvet and put fake flocked velvet back on. For the most part it looks the same as the real stuff. But I prefer the real velvet my self.
