What about Rivets?

With all the mods being done to Sit-Drags, etc. along with discussions on sewing machines... it got me thinking... has anyone used rivets to join their materials? I know little to nothing about them except that they are used in many applications to join items, including purses, jeans, etc.

Couldn't they be used to join a SD to a belt for instance, or to attach molle loops to a belt for those without a sewing machine? Is anyone familiar with how strong they are as I know they can come in aluminum or steel? Just an idea I thought I would bring to the experts.

I'm definitely not an expert on saddle mods but have dealt with rivets a lot. I wouldn't use them on a sit drag or anything climbing related. It's not that rivets themselves are weak but that there isn't a good way to distribute the load. You can use backup washers and practice to get the overlapping pieces to squeeze down tight. I wouldn't trust aluminum rivets to squeeze down tight enough and you may need a hydraulic rivet gun.
It would be cheaper easier and lighter just to learn how to sew webbing.
