Hey everyone, what size fid would I need for 1/4” amsteel in mm. I was looking at cutting down some knitting needles but not sure of the mm size with the 1/4” amsteel or what size Samson fid to buy. Thanks in advance

Google Mark Dohring, he has a nice youtube video explaining just what your looking for, if you scroll down through the comments under his video he explains what needle size, I cant remember off the top of my head, I gotta get some tomorrow as well and my memory is horrible!

Appreciate it!

I pretty much resorted to using a wire fid for everything. Sure makes buries easier.

I do the same but make my own out of .035 weld wire. Makes a full length burry very easy. I bought a cheap plastic fid 3pack for the locked brummels. Ive also use a pen.

I made a fid for 1/4-inch Amsteel out of a size 10 knitting needle. It totally worked, but if I were to do it again knowing what I know now I'd go with a size 10.5. Here's a little info so you can make a better decision if ordering a knitting needle online:

0.25 inches = 6.35 mm
Size 10 knitting needle = 6.0 mm
Size 10.5 knitting needle = 6.5 mm
Size 11 knitting needle = 8.0 mm

The needle sizes are O.D., but the walls are super thin so I think a 10.5 needle would be perfect while an 11 would be too big. For the record, I won't be making another fid for 1/4-inch Amsteel splicing b/c the 10 is fine especially using a pusher (I used a bamboo skewer).
