Wild Edge Stepp Amsteel Step Aider Idea (Fixed or Removable)

I just got a set of 8 Wild Edge climbing stepps and have been tinkering with them to better fit my run and gun style. I love the fact that they are roughly 8 total lbs (8 pack), solid as heck and quiet to install and take down! They also make a sweet saddle/sling style platform which suits my sit drag saddle quite well. My dilemma for the 8 pack was height, so I decided to play around with some 3/16” amsteel I had which can be seen in the pics below to get to a more condusive hunting height for me (+20’).

The pic below is an illustration of the height that could be attained with only 20” gaps between each stepp. You can see that using 6 stepps and the amsteel aides can get me to 20’ plus. Especially if I stretch the stepps out a bit! That leaves me with 2 stepps left to use as my platform.

The next pic is of the amsteel aider. From it you can determine the overall length and eyesplice length.

I believe I will leave the aider attached on the left side when bagging them up. The aider rope will get wrapped up and stored with the spliced stepp rope. This way the stepps and aider can all be stored in the carry bag together hopefully simplifying the overall process.

I just thought I should share this just in case it could help a fellow saddle hunter....

Please post other ideas, comments etc. regarding this method and/or the Wild Edge stepps...

First off welcome aboard.

That is awesome. Great idea.

Have you climbed with them yet?

Have you tried to get them all into the carry bag yet?

That is an awesome idea. I have some spare amsteel, I'm going to give that a try. I wonder if a price if pvc or something over it would make the aider easier to find in the dark

Thanks for the welcome...I’ve climbed with them three times thus far and the process has got easier each time. Takes me just under 8 minutes to be 20 ft up and I’m still practicing the saddle platform....I’m hoping to be all setup and strapped in under 10 minutes....that is the goal at least!

All steps are in the bag with the aider attached as well.

Probably not a bad idea for some.....I’m going to be trying a dark setup soon to see how it goes. If I feel safe without it that would me great! I identify as a minimalist...:)

Sounds like you may have found your set up. Good for you.

I like the idea. I think you can get more out of them using reds aider idea though.

I’ve seen both aiders and they seem to work very well...I haven’t attempted that method yet.....next on my climbing to do list!

With the sliding aider you can safely stretch out your stride. I can get 7- 7.5 ft with two steps. I'm 5'11" my first step can be as high as my chest and I can get on that with one step. The second ends up being lower due to not being able to reach higher.

I just got the wild Edge aider. Going to give a whirl tomorrow.

I played with a similar aider set up last year but my aiders were made out of webbing and permanently attached on both sides. This caused them to get tangled up in the bag. I think your idea will work much better.

I like that idea a lot! One thing I didn't like about the WE, especially when using the aider was the variance in the steps. Now, I know that was my fault, but I didn't like it. When using the WE aider and the red aider, I would put my foot in the step and then sinch it up as high as possible to help maximize a step, which, imo, is a great way to go up. But, when coming down, the step sizes may vary a little and that next step would be a little farther than I thought it would be and I just did not like that. I believe it is very important that YOU find out YOUR system and perfect what you like. I have learned that everyone likes something different than the next. In my case, I like sticks with a fixed loop removable aider.

looking good--Noticed PVC was suggested, but it gets slippery and packs horribly...Didnt see it mentioned above, but might have missed it...sliding a piece of garden hose, or flexible poly hose over the aider step makes a huge difference. Just throw a knot on each side to keep it in place--used to build a bunch of etriers this way for aid climbing and caving.

The pics below are with the aiders fully attached and bagged. The removal of each of the stepps is also unaffected by the addition of the aiders which is a huge plus and time saver. I though I was going to have to attach at least one end...it appears that is not so...

I also set up a two stepp platform which is rock solid! Sure am glad I went the Wild Edge direction!
