Working out

I did the Tough Mudder at Beaver Creek, CO. 12+ miles at 12k+ feet elevation. Up and down ski runs. It's not nearly as fun as it sounds. Yeah that was an a$$ kicker.

The worst obstacle for me was the alpine ponds. The water was 35-40 degrees. The first pond was ok. It was about 30 meters wide and only waist/chest deep. The second pond couldn't be waded. They also placed 3 rows of barrels across the pond so you had to swim under water. I physically couldn't take in a breath after the second row. It was brutal.

Haha. Yep, the cold water is brutal. The mudder is usually so hot here that you almost look forward to it. But going under that ice water is always a shock. They have used railway cars full of water here the last couple of years and a front end loader to constantly keep adding ice.

The hills are a real bitch. After my first one, a couple buddies and I started meeting at sledding hills and ski jumps to run laps up and down. It has made a huge difference. At one point we were going to get shirts that said "you shoulda ran more hills" I The back because it seemed like we passed a ton of people on the hills.

It's been a couple of years since I have trained that hard, and I have to admit, the next 6 months have me a little worried. But the training is always worth it when the event is easier.

Yea, @Erniepower I did not train nearly enough in 2016. Right now I'm 16 pounds heavier than my lowest...(5'7" 220 pound) although I love when people try to clear me out when I'm net-front in hockey...lol...it doesn't work well for hanging obstacles like the rig, with the nunchuks or baseball's or rings...lol

@bubba g zone 9. I've seen 10 deer total all season, but that's an improvement over last year. Definitely envious of these guys who get to 'pick' which deer they wanna shoot rather than the first one that steps into range.

@g2outdoors c'mon that sounds like a blast! Lol. At Killington you have to swim 60 meters acrosd the pond, climb a rope ladder, Tarzan swing on short ropes under a bridge, ring a bell, then drop 20 feet back into the pond and swim the rest of the way.

I skipped and did burpees....lok

I'm 5'7", 180# and I played hockey for a long time until I busted my shoulder up and had 2 surgeries. My friend's dad used to call me the fireplug (I have red hair) because they couldn't clear me out in front of the net, so I can only imagine how hard it is to get you out with those extra pounds! :D

LOL...it usually involves a goalie stick in the nethers....I only play pickup hockey now...way more fun, no one thinks they are 'gettin a 'call up' any day now' and its not the Stanley Cup finals. we've got a good group avg age about 43....most guys in decent shape...and we know everyone at the rink so we skate for 2 hours some nights

LOL. That is nice. I miss playing. I had both surgeries in college and decided that was it. Haven't played since, but my friends from the hockey team in college are still some of my closest friends to this day.

This is what I have to do to get to my tree stand. LOL

I've powerlifted for over 10 years and been bodybuilding for the last 6 years. None of its for hunting but i love working out!

Lol i used to workout hard with weights but that was when i justed wanted brute strength. Now i find that with all the miles i put on in the woods, and just body weight exercises im more than good. I was looking at trying one of those "train to hunt challenges". I love 3D but want more of a challenge.

I've looked at those. They are tempting

Yeah they look like a hunters dream of an amusement park lol!! From what i have heard they are intense just imagine sprinting as hard as you can then shooting something at 60yds lol. That is a challenge but no way I would do it without really training for something of that nature!!

Sounds like a great time, But it also sounds like a excellent way to develop bad shooting habits very quickly.

I too thought of those issues. I shoot really well now and is my craft. I think my plan for this style of competition on a training perspective is to train each discipline separately. Then after a month start slow and do some sort of activity to get the heart rate up. Starting slow at first and mentally preparing for that shot. As time progresses increase in difficulty by raising the heart rate and then shooting. While doing this in conjunction with training each discipline separately. Again to lets not forget there is a mental game to one of these events and that too needs to be incorporated.

I used to be in shape for all the old times wrestling tournaments. After both shoulders and having my bicep reattached I decided I'd better let it go before I screwed myself up more. Now between work, kids and my business in lucky to find time to do minimal work outs. I'm only 5' 8" and 210 lbs I could drop an easy 15 of I had a weight class to meet.

Ive been a high level athlete for nearly 30 years. Cycling and nordic skiing all over the country/world. Im old and "retired" but still train 1-2 per day 7 days per week. I also have a BS in sports science and my job is that of a coach and strength and conditioning guy, so I need to be pretty good shape. I find the saddle hunting to be super physical so being lean and light has got to help! These days its 2-3 days of strength, 3-4 runs per week, a bike ride or 2 and 1 AM pick up hockey. Im the OPPOSITE of the guy in front of the net at 5'10 and 150lbs. But I backcheck and forecheck all game!:)

I started walking 2.5 miles 3 days a wk, then upped that to a lw on my back with a 20 or 25lb plate strapped to it. Then running. I suffered shin splints for longest time when I started running. I just ran 5k the other day. Strange but my calves/ankles/feet hurt for days, then I run again and pain again. I'm over weight, but this is the first fall my lower back didn't go out. Has to be connected to the running, so I don't want to stop.
