Working out

I started walking 2.5 miles 3 days a wk, then upped that to a lw on my back with a 20 or 25lb plate strapped to it. Then running. I suffered shin splints for longest time when I started running. I just ran 5k the other day. Strange but my calves/ankles/feet hurt for days, then I run again and pain again. I'm over weight, but this is the first fall my lower back didn't go out. Has to be connected to the running, so I don't want to stop.
Running definitely helps with my core and back also. The thing about running is that you have to make sure you don't hurt anything else. I prefer trail running much more because of the lower impact, but it's also convenient when I can go out my front door and do 2-3 miles in before it gets dark.

I keep telling myself that if my shoulders get to wrecked for obstacles that I'll start doing long distance trail runs. Someday I'd like to do a marathon or even a 100 miler

I have been playing hockey also for 40 years. The only good exercise I get. Too many 12 oz curls afterward though.

I do P90X3 and Body Beast. Usually alternate between them doing each for a week. Good all around workouts. (I'm 56 and I can't do all the cardio I used to do. Although it seems everything I do now is cardio)

Any of you guys on strava. Com? Good way to keep motivated and track your runs, walks or in my case mt biking. I ride 2 to 3 days a week from February to September. My deer season here is Sept to jan. This year i put in 650 miles. I also do setups and push ups. I havent done weights in a few years.

Be cool if others on here were on strava... Pm if you are.. Ill add you as a friend

reviving an old topic, are there any of you doing any spartans around the country this year? I just signed up for the chicago super, and the mn sprint. I bought a trifecta pass for $300 which is a great deal. combined with the beast in colorado, I am on track for my first trifecta medal.

it would be great to see some of you guys out there.....

Hey @Erniepower I haven't signed up for any for 2017 races yet. I'm just starting my training again after a few setbacks....got diagnosed with cervical spinal stenosis which is effecting the nerves going down my right arm. Starting PT next week.

So hopefully I'll get back to race shape soon.

The real bummer is with the neck thing I can't rock climb....all the looking up during belay and hanging off a ledge 100 feet up is no place for your arm to go numb. Lol

@Erniepower how did your race season go? I ended up only doing the Spartan at Fenway Park. training hard now for 2018. we remodeled our 'in-law' kitchen which had been my 'gym'...so now I'm relegated to the garage. almost done setting up for fulltime training...just need to work on heat (damn cold New England winters)...lol went to grab my barbell and thought my fingers would stick to it. lol

Here my garage gym which I christened "deaths-head fitness". LOL

48" pull up bar
Suspension trainer
Rings
7' (45#) Olympic barbell w/assorted iron & bumper plates
FIT landmine
10# & 20# macebell
Adjustable kettle bells
Sandbags
1.5" Ropes for climbing, jumping, and battling
Bulgarian training bag (also DIY)

Now I have no excuse to be a slob. Lol

this is all stuff I've collected over time or made DIY...don't want anyone to think I'm Daddy Warbucks and could afford all this stuff in one shot. lol

It was tough but I made it. I did the sprint in MN the super in Chicago, and the beast at Breckenridge in Colorado. I've put almost 500 miles on my shoes this year and will be trying for more next year. For some dumb reason, I purchased a trifecta pass and am signed up for the ultra beast in Colorado next year.

The thing I am most excited for is my son will be 4 this winter and can run the kids race in MN and Colorado.

good stuff man!! that garage gym is cool. I like the homemade landmine. My session this am was brisk as outside temp was 13f! had to wear a light glove to handle the kettlebells and barbells.

I did the same over the weekend but it was in the twenties. I had my OCR gloves out there and threw them on. Had to take them off for the Kbell overhead swings as they were just too grippy.

The landmine was easy. $4 conduit pipe and a $6 castor (both from home depot). Not sure how durable it will be but for $10 I could build 5 for the price of a brand name.

I sit and drink a lot of beer it builds my upper body lifting my beer mug. I do walk and ride a mountain bike but with a injured back and pelvic I have alot of pain. I try and do my best.
