This is very interesting my mother is a seamstress , she is 78 and still sewing , she has a machine that is pretty heavy duty , she doesn't think it would handle larger materials. She looked at my saddles and could see the difference in quality via the way they were stitched. So I gues I will have to get the model number to see , Ive been very interested in sewing now. I've never had this intrest before I started seeing all this man crafting going on here in this forum and I do think its cool there is a new thread for this

Gutermann's Upholstery thread: Will this work well for DIY saddles/ backpack modifications? If not I could return it and pick up the Gutermann "Heavy Duty" from Joann Fabrics. Neither gave any specs on the spool nor did this type have any smaller spool sizes. Just want to make sure I am working with quality materials before I start. Thanks in advance!
 
I think as long as your needle can handle it and you can get it tension properly, it will more than sufficient. I cannot believe how strong the stitches are on the stuff I have sewn up. Heaven forbid if I have to undo something... forget about it.

I just finished sewing up a new swaider, slightly longer than the previous one I had. Also did some repairs on my daughter's seat cover for her car and sewed up a saltwater fishing belt that will be used while jigging the cape cod canal. How I ever lived without a sewing machine is beyond me :)

Have we agreed on a weight rating for the speedy stitcher threads (big and small) and could we get that info added to this thread?

I know the rating has been posted here somewhere, just wondering if we'd reached a consensus?

EDIT: the number that I found for the thicker thread is 55#.

EDIT2: According to the site below the coarse thread is TEX-350 and the fine thread is TEX-270

Question about sewing awl - Just bought the Harbor Freight cheapie and wanted to confirm - do the needles supplied push through webbing instead of cutting it, and anyone know what size polyester thread comes with the Harbor Freight unit?
 
Anyone know the durability of these Singer's Heavy Duty 4452 for saddle mods? Not sure if they would hold up to a bit of manly thread injecting

I have sewn multiple saddles, four camping tarps, a holder for arrows, sheath for a knife and miscellaneous items with mine. I have destroyed a few needles in the process but the machine rocks.

Yeah. That thing rocks. Best investment I have made in a while. Thanks again for the recommendation and pushing me a little to buy it!!

My son is actually taking lessons from me now too. He's making a dump pouch for the saddle I made him.

Awesome! I wish know I would have ponied up a little more and got the walking foot model, the 1152 I believe
 
The walking foot would be great for some of the stuff I have done so far. Specifically my 10'x12' hammock tarp. Silpoly is a tough fabric to sew without stretching over 10-12 feet.

I know they make walking foot adaptors for some other sewing machines. I'm just not sure there is one for the 8700 though. I have not looked either as I have other things to concentrate on and spend money on right now.

Know absolutely nothing about sewing but this thread has me really, really intrigued haha. Enough so that I just started searching the local area for a decent used machine. 2 I’ve come across are a singer 401a or kenmore 158. Both are 50 dollars. Anyone have any input on either one?

I don't know much about the 401a, but I have a Kenmore 158. It is pretty capable for a home machine.
 
Going through some things, I have found a Rocketeer, meticulously kept by it's previous owner. Waiting for my materials to arrive, thanks for this thread! I've learned a lot already.
