2019 Team 13 Thread

I hope to provide trophy does as well! Public land hunter from Ohio here. Second year on a saddle. Tree stands are gathering dust in the shop now.

Public land here in GA too. Haven't used a stand in a. few years either. My brother and I have a hunt planned next year to Ohio. We were born there and our dad hunted public till the day he died. So it will be a bit of a nostalgic trip for us.

Sorry folks just getting up to speed. My bow season starts October 1st here in Western New York. I got two Deer Management Permits for my WMU and I have an additional "Antlerless" tag and an "Either Sex" tag for bow/muzzleloader. I wish every one of my Lucky 13 Members a great, safe and productive season!!! Lets do this!!!!

Anyone headed out this weekend? I know some of you don’t open till next Tuesday. Hope to get a couple sits in this weekend.

I'm bangin' for the 10-1 good luck to those that can get out now!!

Team 13 Members, how many for your pre-rut hunting strategies are:

1. Hunting Public
2. Hunting Private
3. Hunting Both
4. Hunting mostly field food sources
5. Hunting mostly woods food sources (mast, abandoned apple orchards)
6. Hunting known bedding locations
7. Hunting suspected bedding locations
8. Hunting a specific (target) buck bed or bedding area
9. Hunting a travel corridor between bedding and feeding
10. Hunting a combination
11. Random hunting based on first sign observed
12. Hunting over bait (In NY we cannot hunt over any kind of bait that the deer or bear can eat) We can use lures and food plots and other naturally occurring foods sources but you cannot use feeders, bring in piles of apples etc.) Highly illegal here.

I'm just curious as to what everyone's strategies may be. Since I started this I'll throw my plan out there. Now I preface this by saying that my plan is variable and subject to vast amounts of change and indecision!!! Anyway, here's where I'm at thusly:

I am hunting both public and private

On private I am hunting mostly in the transition areas or slips of cover between bedding and feeding locations both field crops (corn) and an old abandon apple/pear orchard. (The apple orchard is on public next to the private parcel I hunt so sometime it gets a lot of pressure.) I am also hunting in areas I have seen/taken deer in the past along travel corridors etc.

On one public parcel I am hunting near a marsh where this spring I found concentrations of rubs and beds. I will be approximately 50-60 yards from the marsh/bedding areas and thick cover where it opens up into more of a hardwood area where there are oaks and hickories. I am still trying to figure out if I should push right up to the marsh or hang back a bit in the more hardwood cover. I am concerned they bed on both sides.

On another public parcel I located a concentration of rubs and bedding near a mass clear cut area way back in. There is a road that provides easy access by I suspect private pressure from one end of the public land so I will hunt the freshest sign (trails, rubs, etc.) I see once I go in.

Within these three "Macro" locations there are several potential "micro" stand locations but this is my early season plan so far. Let me know your thoughts and suggestions.

I am going to be hunting both private and public. This year I am trying to focus on being a more disciplined hunter. In the past due to my schedule I hunted when it was convenient and not necessarily based on wind or other factors. This is my first year with a saddle and I am really excited to be able to be more of a mobile hunter.

Any good hunt stories from this past week/weekend?

Cold front moving through this evening. 49° now and back up to upper 70s Saturday. Man, I wish the opener were 24 hours earlier.

I’m hunting 90% public land this year. Only private I hunt is the 14 acres where I live. Got a couple does with button bucks in my clover plot pretty much daily. Gonna give the does a pass for now cuz they should pull in a couple nice bucks in daylight hours come November.

Early season strategy is to move in close to a few different bedding spots I scouted this summer. Hunting aggressive and moving in close is relatively new for me, I’m going to give it a whirl. I scouted more this preseason than the last 5 years combined, hope it pays off. Still have a few cameras out I haven’t checked yet, hope to see a couple nice bucks, which will help determine the next move.
