TEAM 10 Discussion Thread

Hey guys my name is Derek I’m from southern Ohio right along the Ohio river this will be my second full season in the saddle I got into it just before things blew up in the saddle hunting. I do the majority of my hunting on public. I will be traveling to Kansas to hunt during the rut again this year on public we usually do pretty good.

Team 10 members. Going to do something I've never done. In Dec, any Team 10 members that would like to come down and hunt with me all it will cost is license and getting here. 100% public land. Tough hunting but I'll kind of take you through my hunting style and gear. I've been known to get on a few decent bucks ;)

I might take you up on that I spend a lot of time in Texas for work actually, just got back from there a couple days ago...absolutely love Texas.

Anyone getting out?? Season in NY opens Oct 1 Tuesday. I will most likely make it out in the PM but will save most of my time for later in the season. Hopefully someone gets us on the board soon :) Good luck fellas

Ummm... we are on the board. I got a doe 2 weeks ago from my Kestrel and entered it as soon as Red opened the submission thread!... He hasn’t updated the points yet.

Good luck in NY, Jefferson! I usually do a weeklong bowhunt near the Finger Lakes and have a lot of fun. Not this year though, I’m afraid.

@drew13 I missed this!! Sorry and congrats well done brother. I like the fleece pouch! Dano? or did you make it yourself?

Glad someone’s doing the heavy lifting! I probably won’t be able to get out until Tuesday evening. And I’ll be likely going to a new area and scouting with the bow. Good luck, @Jefferson10940!

Thanks man!

Made the fleece pouch myself. I have a few different sizes for different bits of gear. They are not perfect, but they’re quiet and the stretch in the fleece is kinda nice. One mod I recently made to them was to fix a problem I was having where when I took my tether out of the pouch, one of my bow hooks would often get caught up in the rope and drop to the ground. I put a couple of rare earth magnets (neodymium) in the bottom to hold the hooks in just enough. Worked well on my last hunt...

Guys.....my life changed these last couple weeks as I will no longer be a married man. Been a loooong time coming and we’re mutually all about it.

I’m giggling like a little girl thinking of all the time freed up.

While I hate to hear about marriages that didn't work out, it sure sounds like it is the best thing for you and I hope you put all this new found free time to good use to the benefit of Team 10!!!!

Well fellas I managed to avoid attending an 8yr old girl’s bday arts & crafts party to tonight (not my daughter’s bday cuz I’d never miss that, it’s a friend of hers)

I lucked out & it’s a mommy/daughter thing so I got to come bake in the FL sun and get my 3rd sit of the season

So here I am suffering for Team 10 & hope to do us proud

It’s over 90degrees, about a 2 mile walk, 0% chance of rain, 0 % chance of shade, 100% chance of sunburn, 100% chance of mosquitoes & hoping the airboat hunters don’t booger it up for me

If I get a deer it usually is a 4.5 - 5hr drag, crawl , carry to the truck thru the swamp

It’s a miserable hunt if I don’t get a deer & it’s more miserable if I do since that leads to more work and borderline heat exhaustion

Can’t explain why i love this so much, cuz it doesn’t make any sense

Good luck, Tape! (Or do you go by Worm?) Hope you get one that makes the work worthwhile....

Season opens tomorrow here in Ohio but I’m traveling for work...I plan on taking my daughter on her first ever hunt when I get home and trying to get a deer with her crossbow. After that I’ll get serious about trying to get a buck for myself.

Luck wasn’t with me

Only 2 does came out at 120yds and fed away

Only good thing was all the skeeters picked me up and flew me to my truck so my legs got a 2 mile break

I'll be sneaking in with the kayak at 3 tomorrow to check on a few cameras :) Tuesdays coming

Good sit last night. The corn was cut two days ago and there were deer everywhere. Mosquitoes were ok until dark and then it was miserable. Gotta go look for an arrow. Forgot my range finder and all my previous marks were gone. Pretty sure I was low but I need to confirm.

I got to scout a place yesterday. Very little deer sign. Most was congregated around the boundary with private where I located a feeder .This is the first year it’s legal to hunt over bait in Bama but you have to buy a special permit. Even with the bait, the deer sign was low there so that piece of public is low on the list.

I did find this track. It’s either a huge dog or a very large bobcat or the elusive “Alabama cougar”;) . I’m leaning towards large bobcat because there were no nail marks. Whatever it was, it was heavy. It was sunk deep in the mud.

I did also figure out a new way to access a small private parcel I have permission. It’s a buddies duck hunting hole. The yellow is standing corn he floods. The whole place is pretty swampy, hence the duck hunting hole, but I have killed several deer there and helped several new hunters kill deer there. The gate is in the SE corner and morning access was always pretty dicey.

I got a kayak this year for some public land access but never thought about private land hunting and then looking at a map one night I saw where I could slip into a small creek on the NE corner and backdoor the North side of this property where all the bedding is located. Should be a cool morning strategy. Although the technical boundaries are more ridgid, the functional property boundary with the neighbor is the creek.

Key:
Purple tents - actual beds I have found
Purple lines - bedding areas
Yellow - standing corn
White - shot deer
Red trail - blood trail
Black - deer recovery location (if no white, dropped in its tracks)
Blue lines - deer travel
