Predator Platform broke on me last night

Mine broke in the exact same spot. Ernie quickly replaced with a Gen 2. The Gen 1 should never be toe hooked and set only by hand otherwise it's just a matter of time that this will happen.

This one was set by hand according to OP. Still broke.

There

Isn't

Enough

Material.

Sorry, but it's just not the best design. Hence the immediate redesign and discontinuation of the product. And OP didn't know about the issue (not the only one) because Tethrd never recalled or even publicized the failure.

It's funny (not haha funny) but since I've been on here I've seen this obsession with weight. The main thing I wondered was how are these manufacturers making these ultra light equipment without sacrificing strength? I guess the answer might be they arent. The camming action of these platforms HAS to be putting incredible stress on the welds. I know they've "tested" them but i guess the question is, did they test it once, statically to get a weight rating or did they test it (under losd) destructively to see the longevity?

This makes me wonder if I should send mine in for a gen 2. Problem is, I don't want to be without a platform in the middle of the season.

From what I’ve seen I sure wouldn’t be using it above about 2’!

I received a Gen 1 platform when they first came out. I was shocked at how fragile the platform appeared. I tested it a couple of times in the backyard but it was clear that, in my view, it wasn't safe for me to use at hunting height. I sent it back for a refund.
Once the Gen 2 came out I thought I'd give it another try and purchased one. The Predator was a very good overall design but was initially, executed poorly with to much emphasis put on light weight, not on safety. The Gen 2 took that great overall design and executed properly and I'm very happy with it.
It seems to me that they should have a retrofit program set up so that Gen 1 owners can send in their platforms and have them retrofitted with the Gen 2 platform and send a mass email to all of the original buyers of the Gen 1, making that offer.

Thanks for all the info here y'all. How do we know if we ordered/received a Gen 1 or Gen 2 platform?

I ordered at the beginning of July so not sure which Gen I ordered, i honestly didn't even know there were two versions.

I'm going out for a hunt this Friday so don't want worry about that when I'm up in the tree

That would seem to me to be an appropriate course of action. Recall them and either swap them out or reimburse.

Send us all new platforms. I think it is ridiculous that we have to wait for a failure before it is replaced. Or before someone is hurt

To be fair, my understanding is that they will swap it if you ask, even if it hasn't broken.

My main concern is the fact that there are folks that are still unaware that the platforms have an issue, because Tethrd has basically refused to admit that the gen 1 was a mistake. They've maintained that it breaks due to misuse such as toe hooking.

That's 100% my point. Tethrd is replacing platforms for people who ask/know. But they haven't published anything on their site, social media accounts, or sent out any email/calls to people who ordered a gen 1.

In my mind, that's extremely irresponsible. Not everyone spends their days crawling around every thread that gets posted here and knows that gen 1s break fairly regularly.

They are busy rubbing elbows with the youtube guys in Michigan

Agreed, but the decision and action shouldn't be put back on the consumer. Tethrd should be proactive.

I did not know they would swap it if it’s not broken
