Predator Platform broke on me last night

Again, "didn't know" continues to be the issue that concerns me. This should have long since been wrapped up.

If I was you, I'd reach out to them and request a gen 2.

I think at a minimum a sticky on here by them would be a good start. I’m shocked they’re willing to assume that kind of liability!

They will not exchange. I went through this the last time a thread came up about breaking. People said to email them so I did. The response was we don't exchange, but if it breaks they will replace. So I guess I just wait and hope I don't get hurt when it breaks.

Another thing I don't understand is they sell the new versa straps and tell you to cam them in or whatever you want, they never say unless you have a Gen 1, which I guess is a "positioning aid".

I received a Gen 1 platform when they first came out. I was shocked at how fragile the platform appeared. I tested it a couple of times in the backyard but it was clear that, in my view, it wasn't safe for me to use at hunting height. I sent it back for a refund.
Once the Gen 2 came out I thought I'd give it another try and purchased one. The Predator was a very good overall design but was initially, executed poorly with to much emphasis put on light weight, not on safety. The Gen 2 took that great overall design and executed properly and I'm very happy with it.
It seems to me that they should have a retrofit program set up so that Gen 1 owners can send in their platforms and have them retrofitted with the Gen 2 platform and send a mass email to all of the original buyers of the Gen 1, making that offer.
I agree that given the gen 1 failures , no one should be w/o platform. You should fairly expect a gen 2 replacement & a return label for the gen 1.......

Wow, just wow. You have that in an email?
Without starting the goverment regulation debate..I'm surprised no none has gotten the CPSC involved.

Yes I have it.

Im just totally taken back by that. Someone doesn't feel safe with a product they discontinued production of because it was breaking and reaches out for an exchange of their new "bullet proof" version and they deny it. And put it in writing. I sure as heck hopen they are "OK" to exchange it when it breaks and your 20' up...especially after a denial in writing. That right there is what business killing law suits are made of.

I'm Not using my ameristep ROS this year. If you aren't comfortable using the predator you have and need something, reach out. You can borrow it.

Thanks for all the info here y'all. How do we know if we ordered/received a Gen 1 or Gen 2 platform?

I ordered at the beginning of July so not sure which Gen I ordered, i honestly didn't even know there were two versions.

I'm going out for a hunt this Friday so don't want worry about that when I'm up in the tree
If you ordered in July of this year from Tethrd, you def. received a Gen 2. However, you can also post a pic here and several folks know.

I appreciate that. I just make sure I'm tethered and also linesman belt on when I get on it. The sad thing about this is I really like the platform, it works perfect for me.

Good:) would just suck to have it break when leaning out for a shot! Glad you're taking the precautions needed to stay safe!

It's funny (not haha funny) but since I've been on here I've seen this obsession with weight. The main thing I wondered was how are these manufacturers making these ultra light equipment without sacrificing strength? I guess the answer might be they arent. The camming action of these platforms HAS to be putting incredible stress on the welds. I know they've "tested" them but i guess the question is, did they test it once, statically to get a weight rating or did they test it (under losd) destructively to see the longevity?

There’s no welds on the Predator. The gen 2 is very stout and I have no worries about toe hooking it.

I guess their plan is to just replace the ones that break while people are 20’ up in a tree and hope nobody dies...

Could you imagine if a treestand manufacturer did that?
It's not a treestand. It's a positioning aid...

Even so, to make it light they had to do something which I'm guessing in this case is reduce the amount of aluminum they cast. First law of thermodynamics is for every action thers an equal and opposite reaction. In this case, dont use enough material they stress breaks it. Can you tell or do you know if they beefed up the gen 2 or why it's considered better (what changed)? I was seriously considering ordering one when the hysteria died down (for next year) but I'm having serious doubts now. The cam action with the weight has to put tremendous stress on it.
