I'm going to join to help the site. But, it would be nice if you had to be a member to SELL on the classifieds but anyone could buy. It kind of limits the benefits to the seller if only members can see their stuff. Not sure if there is a way to do this...but I think it would help.
I agree with this, and am glad to pay for a membership. Totally worth it to me. But only allowing paid members to see the classifieds will greatly reduce the number of potential buyers, and thus the overall effectiveness of the classifieds. It makes good sense to charge sellers without restricting the number of buyers, if possible. I can see the value of it in helping to legitimize classified users and reducing scammers. But keep in mind that most scammers are probably sellers, not buyers. Therefore, maybe consider charging to POST to the classified forum, but not to view it.
I want to thank you both for your suggestions. You've given me something to think about.

The problem with that is people would go to no extent cheat the system. IF they saw you looking for something or comment on another post looking for what they had for sale all I would have to do is message them and sell your equipment.
Great comment. Thank you.

they can do that anyway. you would only be able to start a thread in classifieds if you were a member. guys can post on any other thread and guys can pm them. if aholes want to go to that extent to save $15, what are you going to do....

at the end of the day its' not my forum and i don't really think i should be telling someone else how to run theirs...but if only a few hundred guys buy memberships and they're the only ones who can buy or sell, the value of the classifieds will be greatly diminished.

Who cares if he is trying to make a profit. We pay for memberships for almost everything we do and never complain. I have gained more knowledge about hunting, DIY, cooking, or just shooting the shhhhhh with people I will most likely never meet for this sit and ArcheryTalk and both sites have been and for the most part are still free. The knowledge we have all gained should cost money. To be honest I wish it was a membership for the use of the website but then people will pull the I pay for the website so I can say whatever I want card. We all want to get paid for our time so why shouldn't Red? He is providing a service to use correct? He still isn't going to make a profit but at least he will have less out of pocket so he can spend it on more hunting gear or friends and family. I would prefer to not have adds all over the site and pay $15 bucks. Drink one less pop (soda) or coffee every other month and you have it paid. Skip going out to lunch 1 day this year and its paid.

If I had a saddle or climbing system to sell it would be cheaper or close to the same amount to pay the 15 then try and sell it on ebay. That is where I sold everything before I went on forums. I don't think that you will see a big hit in what is for sale, you might see things sit longer but at the same time who wouldn't pay 15 bucks to have a shot at a saddle now as apposed to 2 or 3 months.

OK. Maybe I misunderstand what Red Squirrel is doing here. I thought he said only members will have classified access. I interpreted that to mean you have to be a member to list something but ALSO have to be a member to see what is listed. If that is correct, then yes, you can list your item for $15 and who wouldn't, but the potential buyers won't see it because they haven't paid the $15. But, maybe I'm missing something here...

I'm with you but you can go on facebook, or a number of other sites/apps and sell your item for free. Monetarily speaking that is. I've been eyeballing all places that sell saddle gear and SH isn't exactly exclusive to saddle gear. It will be the only place you have to pay in cash just to be able to sell or buy saddle gear tho.

Once again I will state that I am going to pay the 15 dollars for the sake of mr squirrel and everything he has put into the site. Because in the end the classified will not exist in the same capacity it does now. I get that some people dont have facebook for whatever reason. I literally only have facebook for the purpose of family, and then buying/selling things. Probably spend 20 minutes a day on there.

I'm not disagreeing there is a large amount of wealth and knowledge I respect that position 100%.

I am looking at simple numbers. 5.8k threads started on the Classifieds the next closest is 3.1k on Anything Saddle Related/Climbing Methods.

Do they have more messages? Yeah, of course they do, they are discussion threads that can be posted on by anybody that thinks they know the best way to do something. Classifieds generally go to PM's or texts for discussion hence the lower message count.

I was just going based off numbers I guess a more analytical approach.
I respectfully disagree. Your numbers are comparing the classifieds to ONE of the sub forums. Almost ALL of this site’s sub forums are about saddle hunting. Just the ”Anything Saddle Related” and the “Climbing Methods and Platforms” forums account for 6.2k threads. If you google ANYTHING about saddle hunting this site is always in the top 2 or 3 of the hits. People come here for saddle hunting info. Not just the classifieds. Which they still can do for free if they choose. Just my 2 cents.

Correct new rule is to see the classifieds you need to be a member but if I need or want a saddle or climbing system I personally would pay the 15 to buy from here opposed to Facebook. Personally I would trust what I bought here better then Facebook. I have had ALOT better luck on here and AT then facebook or ebay.

This place is without a doubt the safest place to buy, or trade. Making the barrier to entry 15 dollars will increase that even more. That's about the only thing I like about it besides the fact that mr squirrel is in need of the money to run the site itself.

I love this site! I am a relatively new member but I’d be willing to put forward $15 of my hard earned money to keep this site going. I’m in the Facebook groups and I can honestly say I get way more value out of this site than the Facebook groups not to mention the connections I’ve made with good people. Just point me in the direction to how I can support this site, group and cause. I’d be happy to help.

I never said people come for just the classifieds. If I did please send me the quote. I said it is very large draw to the website for new users.

Okay, fair enough. I compared it to the area most of your google searches are going to pull you to, sorry I did not add in every forum thread count such as the Trail Cam Photos, Old Hunt Contests, Videos, and Cooking.

Just for fun I went ahead and added them all up and the total thread count is an astonishing 19,914. This is including everything from Videos to old Hunt Contests. The Classifieds are sitting a little over 5800. A little simple math and you find that roughly 30% of the started threads are coming from the classifieds alone.

How can you disagree with the numbers? I never said people come just for the classifieds I said its clearly the largest draw which singularly it is all you have to do is go to the home page and look at the numbers.

That means you have to add up every single started thread from Camping, Cooking, Trail Cam photos, and old hunt contests to equate for 70% of the content.

People are looking at these classifieds like they are a bad thing and that this site is only for "wealth of information and knowledge" I hate to tell ya they classifieds proved just as much knowledge and information or they have for me at least.

Generally people quit reading before a post is finished and don't get all the information someone is stating. I have been in favor of the $15 for Red, the fact of the matter is, the classifieds make up a big part of the website.

Keep all your logic and reasoning out of this Bchadwick

That honestly sounds more like the facebook groups to me. I don't want to be overly harsh - but if you're literally here to buy, sell, and ignore people maybe you're not really bringing value to the community here?

I don't really use the classifieds but some day I might but even if I never use it 15 dollars is well worth it . Guys will spend hundreds of dollars on hunting equipment and not bat an eye so what's another 15 bucks . I think it's well worth it and it's about time we as a group help Red out. Just my thoughts.

@Bchadwick1990 you said “the classifieds are clearly the sites biggest draw” I misspoke when I said you thought the classifieds were the ONLY reason people come here. I apologize for that. And I did read your entire post. As a matter of fact I read every word of every post on this thread. I still RESPECTFULLY disagree that the classifieds are the largest draw though. Taken one at a time Yes it’s clearly the biggest single forum. But This is a saddle hunting information sharing community. So when people come here they are looking for all kinds of info regarding saddle hunting. Not just platforms or sticks or whatever. So when you only use the classifieds forum totals and not all of the saddle hunting related forums totals for your numbers comparison I don’t think that’s apples to apples. Again like I said, just my 2 cents. You can disagree. This is what I like about this site. It’s okay to agree to disagree. Hence the word respectfully. Happy hunting and good luck this season.
