Rules are Rules if we didn't have rules all we would have is cause.

In this day and age if people cant read past someone only writing glowing reviews about a certain product then you need to get out into the world more.

I think that the signature needs to list an affiliation or maybe badges next to the name. I get that Taptalk cuts some of that out but oh well you cant regulate everything. Set rules up that if you start marketing outside of certain areas you get suspended for so long and depending on how many strikes you have depends on how long your suspended and eventually you just get booted. If your a known affiliate and don't add a signature line you get warned after that suspended rules apply.

Hold the companies accountable for their affiliates. Lock their vender accounts if their affiliates get to many violations. If venders want their own section make them pay for it and within that section and only that section venders customer service and marketing can be done but only within their paid vender section.

There are ways. We are all smart enough to figure this out.
Agreed. If the prostaffers or affiliates are getting paid for promoting their products why shouldn't the moderators for their efforts?

Look at https://advrider.com/f/ for a forum that managed to have good positive outcomes from having active vendor participation.

I find it disappointing as a paying member that a group of very experienced members that are being heavily censored and providing input based on their experience. Yes prostaff members will have some bias, set up rules and consequences for them stepping out of their Lane. Simply saying that somebody is affiliated with a company so they can't comment is not constructive, saying they can't comment negatively about a competitors product and having a simple reporting mechanism keeps everything moving forward. Provide each interested vendor a sub-forum of their own for promoting products and interacting with customers.

I can only speak for myself, I’m doing this b/c I enjoy saddle hunting & want people to safely be introduced to it. But with so many new members it has become babysitting for the most part. Not looking to get paid for my time. Again know there’s no hidden agenda & were legitimately working out solutions that requires LESS moderation.

I agree. As it turns out we are paying for a service here even if it is just for selling. Not saying we were forced to pay but as it turns out there aren't any other options for good info on saddle hunting gear. Most of us like being informed consumers before paying big bucks on saddle gear. Having access to the vendors, their opinions, discounts, manuals would be handy to make an informed decision on products. We are big boys and girls and can decide from that point whether or not to buy from that vendor. I'll stop beating the dead horse now.

You're paying for access to sell in the classifieds that is all, that is the service. That was clearly laid out when the membership was created. Everything else was accessible without membership. You are receiving that service as described at time of purchase. The owner has fulfilled their end on that. I wouldn't bring the paid membership into this discussion.

Turns out saddle hunting is a niche market and there aren't many options to sell saddle hunting gear elsewhere. I am paying for that service. I possibly wouldn't need to sell my gear if I were a more informed consumer and vendors were allowed to speak freely on the site.

I love this thread.

It makes me step back and think about the bigger picture, a larger time frame, a collective journey.

As I sit here and reflect on this thread, the couple years that I've been a member, and the countless older threads that I've gone back and read, I can't help but arrive at a few fundamental questions.

What was the purpose/usefullness of saddlehunter.com at its origin, and in its early years?

In light of the substantial changes to the commercial saddle hunting landscape, what is the future purpose/usefullness of saddlehunter.com?

These are not meant to be threatening questions, but I understand why some would take them that way. I personally don't intend to walk away from the site any time soon, even if my answers to those questions are a little depressing. Change happens I suppose.

I love and have loved this place. I am deeply indebted to its creator and a host of other veterans and nubes who have taught me much. I enjoy many and most of y'all's camaraderie. I thank you all for all that I have received. I hope I've been able to give some back along the way.

Some of us paid for a membership to help the owner of the site pay the bills knowing that running this is not free for him. I support several forums that I participate in in the hopes that the sites will remain operational and allow me access to useful information. I signed up for a membership shortly after finding the site and seeing the wealth of information available here, reducing that information by censoring some of the most experienced members is counterproductive....

Just thinking aloud here..

Historically, Red has always listened to the people. I say that is one of his greatest qualities, honestly. It certainly isn't his video making skills! ;)

But, this is a very sensitive situation and it's very easy for dozens of people to walk away with a very bad taste and reputation when discussions like this take place. Be wise with your words.

Proverbs 21:23 comes to mind:
"Those who guard their mouths and their tongues keep themselves from calamity."

Don't act rash in these situations and if you feel yourself getting heated over this, take a little break. At the end of the day, we're all here for the brotherhood we have created and our love for innovation. Yes, it is frustrating to see no vendors here for me. I agree there should be a vendor and maybe even a sponsor forum here. I am a member of several forums that have both of those and it doesn't have to be who is the best. Just promote what you make, say the features it has, and not express why it is better than this or that.

This place used to be so special. Sadly, it isn't that anymore, but, it is my main forum by far. I enjoy the friendships, knowledge, experience, etc of this place. No, I don't know the answer, but this is a thread that could very easily head south.

This isn't that important in the grand scheme of life.

I possibly wouldn't need to sell my gear if I were a more informed consumer and vendors were allowed to speak freely on the site.

Flip that logic around and see how it sounds.

You wouldn't need to sell your gear if the site didn't allow vendors and their their ProStaff to plug their wares or criticize others leading you to an unhappy purchase decision.

When you claimed I said I signed a contract that was a lie. As for the rest, you are certainly entitled to your opinion of me and my motives.

You may even value your opinion; I don't.
Was it Dave? I see you amended the post, so we'll never know, will we. However, I sure as hell didn't lie. PM me if you want to discuss further.

Sorry @DaveT1963 . I didnt say you didn't and wasnt trying to imply it. It was a rhetorical comment--not everyone is a cordial as you.

No worries. I was unaware prostaffers lost the right to make comments on all product reviews. I know the rule now and will follow it.

For all the bloviaters Newsflash, I gave product reviews to help people save money so they didnt have to buy everything for them self. I have zero to gain from taking the time to do them.

I stand 100% every product review I have made. For those that might have got some use from them I'm happy. For those that believe in biased.....Simple.....DONT READ 'EM. I didnt realize I forced anyone to read anything.

I'm sorry, but you're kidding right? Manufacturers have countless channels, including their website, phone lines, media of all sorts, pamphlets, mailing, tutorials, hands on clinics, etc. To blame this site for the manufacturer's inability to educate you on their product and how to use it to meet your expectations and liking to keep you from the point of selling it is absolutely ridiculous. That blame falls on the inadequacies of the manufacturers media and assets development and distribution, as well as over-promising. NOT an independent website who's rules and goals from what I"ve seen are to stay independent.

This is just one resource. It's the best out there, and the library of knowledge is currently free.

Wouldn't it be possible to let the vendors handle/moderate the "vendor" area? They would basically self regulate each other as long as there was an equal representation.
Would it be possible? Absolutely. Hammock forums has a page for each vendor (I think they pay for the page). The issue I see is vendors cross contaminating each others pages. Could lead to bickering and a lot of headaches for moderators and red squirrel.

I have faith that they will figure something out with time.

I'm trying to offer some constructive criticism/ideas not %! $$ in your Cheerios. It is the best resource out there so why not allow it to evolve into something better? I'm just throwing out ideas. I would've had no idea about saddle hunting if it wasn't for this site. Why go to a vendor site when I can talk to both the vendor and the consumer in the same place possibly at the same time?

So be appreciative for what it is and what you do have. My point was just that you got exactly what you paid for with the membership, and to imply the owner running the site the way they want is harming your saddle hunting experience to the point of selling your gear is ridiculous and disrespectful to them. Sure, having all the interactions between parties you want in one place is easier for YOU, but a heck of a lot harder on the logistical and management side, and seems like its not what the site was designed for or the goals are.

Exactly!!! Definitely not threatened by this...... this was a small tight knit diy community. Now with so many commercial available options, we find our self in the landscape we are in. Anything that’s being done now is a result of that commercial impact. Unfortunately it’s unrealistic to think we’re gonna rewind to where we started. But I do think the members should have some expectation of information & free discussion here. How you separate that from people that are FIGHTING for your consumer dollars is the challenge......... We’ll get there, & everyone is a bit hypersensitive right now.

This is all just sad to watch go down. Everyone that has been here for a long time is now affiliated with companies that didn't exist or weren't currently making products when they were figuring out how to make saddles comfortable and effective. I don't understand how that doesn't influence current responses. It's becoming more fun to read through old posts rather than new ones.
I appreciate @redsquirrel and the other moderators time to manage this growing forum. As a small business owner and volunteer wrestling coach, I understand how time and effort and passion can go unrewarded and even harshly criticized as being unfair. This is a new market in a tiny niche industry and you all are trying to hold on to the collectivist value that saddle hunters had just a few years ago. Unfortunately, I don't see how that is possible because most people refuse to play nice with others, especially on the internet where there are no real repercussions.

Huh? You took that the wrong way. I was just implying I probably wouldn't have bought half the stuff I had if I would've known what I was I was buying. I had no idea there were "prostaff" in signatures until today. Turns out the unbiased reviews on some of the gear might not have been so unbiased. And turns out this is about the best and/or only place to sell it back.
