I was at goodwill the other day and found a slumberjack, made in USA, duck canvas sleeping bag for 6 bucks. The previous owner used it as a dog bed as far as I can tell with the amount of hair and the smell. My other sleeping bags are military surplus down bags. I've always just filled the tub and hand washed and hung to dry. That seems to work ok but I'm thinking there is a better way. Anybody have any diy tricks for getting their sleeping bags clean and scent free? Baking soaps and whatever detergent we currently have in the laundry room is what I've been using

Nikwax techwash. Is it down or synthetic? They have a down wash whichnis excellent as well.

The tags are cut off. It has duck canvas outside and the inside is flannel/fleece. I would assume synthetic fill

Good find! Those are warm and heavy duty. I used to use mine as a bivvy with my other bag underneath during Colorado elk season where it was really cold. Looks like you're doing the right thing washing it. I rarely wash mine but when I do, I hang it out on the line to dry. I think the good 'ol outdoors does wonders on smells if left out there long enough. Maybe some homemade scent killer after a couple washes and hang it out on the line?

take it to a laundry mat and put it in one of the large bulk washers !

Haha....this is an older 1.

That's what I ended up doing.....I vacuumed as much of the dog hair off as I could, then I went to the dollar store a got 8 lint roller sticky paper roll things and used up all but 1 getting all the dog hair off, and then took it up to the laundry mat and ran it 2 cycles with our normal detergent and baking soda. It took 3 days to fully dry hanging in the sun during the day and I hung it with a small fan blowing on it over night. It's been camping a handful of times and was a good thrif store find for sure....

I was going to also recommend sticking it in a large tub if you have big enough one or maybe a closet and hit it with ozone if you have one. Ozone is awesome.
