Too much gear!!!

I am guilty of this at times. I had my bag packed last night to hunt this AM and ended up going to a whole new spot. Ditched the pack, grabbed my knife and range finder out of it and slung my 1-stick around my back and off I went.

My pack is full on the way in, but all it has is kill kit/orange hat(public land idiots only used while dragging or when required) binos, range, warm clothes, saddle( with pouch for linemans, tether, reppel, h2o( Nalgene + sawyer squeeze mini) and scent wafers. It seems like a lot, but when I'm up the tree it is basically empty.

My pack for early season has very little in it. Gutting kit, call, small first aid kit, cellphone battery, wind checker, flagging tape, thermacell, and that’s about it. In late season my pack is full but the extra items are boot blankets, heavier coat, and heavier hat to put on once I’m in the tree. These items are not heavy, just bulky. I do carry more than the bare minimalists but it’s a comfortable weight for me to carry. I am looking for a better pack than the Walmart special I’m using now but that may have to come once my birthday gets here.

Permethin will get your thermacell out of your gear. Didnt believe the hype, but got into it this year.

Oh yeah. I use it too. If it’s just me hunting I don’t carry the Thermacell but when my daughter is with me, she’s a magnet even with Permethrin. I buy the concentrate and mix my own spray. Great stuff.

I picked up a Badlands Superday at the Costco in Tulsa a couple years ago, may be worth a look see in your area. On markdown at the end of the season it was around $85-90. A little bigger than I need for early season but nice for colder weather later on.

I teach hunter safety (or at least I did before Covid…) and I always pack a basic first aid kit, a whistle, and a spare (small) light. If I’m going way back I bring more safety stuff. I also bring a small pepper spray for dogs. I’ve had some scary encounters with dogs while hunting. I like to have an option besides getting bit or killing a dog.

I've got a sling pack that I just got! Hunted with it about 6 times. Really all I need. It has a scout platform and 4 steps in it w/ an aider.

I've treated far too many injuries to go to the woods without my way more than basic first aid kit. I also have severe allergic reactions to some pollen's and to bee stings and my meds go with me also. Anyone who thinks it can't happen to them is betting their life on it.

I found that packs were my problem with carrying to much....loose the pack and u don't take to much junk cause u don't have the room anyway
You’re right. But I’d rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

For example, in my kit I always have blood clotting agent. Why? Because I heard about one guy who was elk hunting miles away from the nearest road. An arrow slipped out of his quiver as he was walking and sliced his femoral artery. He was with some buddies and they put a tourniquet on his leg and carried him for miles.
