Do you practice scent control?

You’re not telling the truth. He never claimed to bend a squirrel step, simply stated they “bend down” when pressure is applied and he hunts 25 to 30’ but has hunted from lower set ups and the ground as well. Stop the BS!
didn't mean to ruffle your feathers, I'm sure you look up to him and probably call him the grandfather/ god father of saddle hunting even though he never invented a saddle until here lately
go read it unless its been edited,
went back and read it myself I can see where it could go either way

It hasn't been edited. The quote is:
I've tried the squirrel steps and they are not even remotely close to being as stable as these steps because they are slick on the backside and they bend down when a load is put on them. You can put these steps on any strap you like and can order them without the ratchet.

To me 2 things are pretty clear
  1. John has a commercial interest in Cranford stuff
  2. John is not alleging that the steps themselves bend, but rather that they deflect downward for him when loaded.

Ok. I agree in No1 but John has a disclaimer at the end of the post refuting this. no 2 isn’t so cut and dry with out adding words. Either way it don’t matter much
He said bend not deflect.
He said bend He didn’t say pulled away from the tree, he didn’t say slid down the tree

Science and controlled tests have proven over and over you’ll never eliminate all scent. You breath will always always always give you away. And some molecules are so small than can slip through any material, like a fart (google why you masks prevent spread of covid but you can still pass farts through three layers of clothing.

I used to do all the extremes but found no different reaction when up wind of deer.

what I have been doing which seems to work is trying to cover the scent on my clothes and shoes to reduce what is left on the ground, brush, etc. what I am doing is storing all my clothes in totes with a sh*tload of cedar blocks that you can get off amazon for clothes storage. I’m talking a bag of blocks per tote. I also drop in those silica packs as moisture breeds bacteria mold etc.
I change into my clothes onsite.

so far I’ve been able to wear hiking shoes with wool socks and not have my dog figure out where I went. Deer have crossed my trial also a few times and never looked around or acted concerned

How many of you consider yourself successful big buck killers? And do you practice scent control or not? Ive always thought you aren’t beating a deers nose! So I’ve just done my best to play the wind, but I don’t have any serious bone on the wall to prove it. Sometimes I ponder trying to be better about it, but it’s a headache.... seems to work for some, but I’ve seen others not have a care in the world and be successful too.

Threads like this are fun to read but normally don’t end well.
Some say 100% my hard core scent control system eliminates my odor and that’s how I kill my deer.
Others could careless about washing and storing their hunting gear and still manage to get it done year after year.
IMO there are hunters out there that could be covered in motor oil and still get it done because of the way they hunt and how hard they hunt.
John E. Would also be at the top of that list because without scent control he is still a killer and would still get it done because he has a understanding of deer most will never grasp myself included.
If you think scent control would help give you confidence and improve your hunts go for it.

I do believe in it, but not to the extent that I think scent control is total control. I still feel like playing the wind is your best bet but having good scent control helps a lot since the best setups are right on the line of being exactly wrong. If the wind is “right” for you, then that means it is exactly wrong for the deer. So technically speaking to get on the deer at the right time on the right trail the wind has to be in their favor and dead wrong for you. Play that line really close for your best bet, and if your scent control is good hopefully a little shift won’t ruin it for you.

All hunters practice some form of scent control it’s just to what extent. For instance I don’t know of any hunter that washes their hunting clothes in tide and uses scented dryer sheets. Some hunters just wash their clothes in scent free detergent and that’s it others a lot more. I am the guy who does a lot more. I try to mimic John Eberhart’s style of scent control, wearing scentlok, using totes etc. I hunt heavily pressured bucks in western PA and Eastern Ohio. I’ve been winded no doubt but much...much less than before. I’ve shot many mature bucks that have walked on or over my trail and never spooked. I’ve shot bucks directly down wind as well. I’m not the bragging type but the question was asked so I’ll state that ever since I started this style of scent control I’ve shot 12 mature bucks in 9 straight years. The biggest was this year, I posted my story about him and another buck I shot in PA in the successful hunts section. It works I’m a firm believer. It’s not 100% but close enough for me not to worry about the wind.
I use tide lol

Well if you disagree a magical midget will appear telling you hes never been winded in 40 years and has 50 state record bucks etc and of you play the wind your an idiot.

Pipe dream? I think there is a fella named John Eberhart that would disagree with you on that one. Stand rotation and approach the sole reason. What about deer density, how high you hunt and the other million factors that go into how many deer you see and or kill.
John kills big deer because he's the best whitetail hunter on the planet. He was proving that way before scent loc.

Agreed. It's like Dan Infalt killing deer in blue jeans and no scent control doesn't prove the opposite (that all scent control and camo are BS). You'd have to have both of them try the opposite of their approach and see how it goes.

Now that would be interesting!

Exactly. I think John downplays his hunting ability by crediting scentlok with all of his success. He knows what he's doing and would still be a good hunter without his magical suits

But he says he ignores the wind. If you and I did that while not wearing Scentlok I don't think we would shoot as many deer as we usually do.

He arrogant as ****. He can't talk for 2 minutes without mentioning how great he is

I used to admire him before I listened to the podcast with him and Infalt.

Hes a great hunter no doubt but is basically insecure as **** and treats anyone who hunts differently as of they are idiots and his way is the best and his results prove it.

He is a **** plain and simple. Very knowledgeable and shares alot of his info but there's something to be said for modestly and treating people with respect.
