So my wife has a sewing machine but doesn't know how to use it much, what needle and thread would I need to play around with making a saddle or pouches or whatever?

Actually she has two of them but is going to give my daughter one of them so I guess I need to see which one would be best for this kind of stuff. Ill try to take pics when I get home this evening. I cant remember what brand they are but I do know they are different brands.

best item a Saddle Hunter can have is the right Mech. The worst item is a wrong Mech., Don't try to make the wrong mech, work, it will only discourage you.

I would use Gutterman's upholstery thread available at Joann's fabrics with a size 18 needle. It should work on most machines and is pretty strong

Damn spell check. LOL.
So is this thread strong enough for life support?

There's a lot more to it than that. Sailrite has a great article on load bearing stitches. Practice lot's before putting your weight on something you made more than 6 inches off the ground
Do you have a link please?

It depends on how many stitches you make. Check out the sewing resources thread on here. @always89y sewed a saddle and sent it around the country to at least 2 dozen of us saddle hunters. He used the V69 thread which is Gutterman's upholstery thread. He named it Sally. It is constructed very well. Here I am swinging with Sally.

Finally got a chance to get the brand and model numbers. Janome JW8100 and a Brother SQ9000. Which one should we keep?
