Trotlines

@Bama_Xander, I wanna see pics and a status update on that boat!
@Nutterbuster, She ran like a scalded dog so I went for it. Got her for $1400 total, split halfway with a buddy, so $700 each. It's nice and open in the middle so it will be great when hauling gear and deer. Got to take her out once and it was a blast. She goes too. Registered 25 mph on my phone app. Way faster than my kayak. My son loves the boat and I imagine many a good time together. We are taking her out to try to get in on the white bass run next Tuesday.

Nothing makes a young boy smile like a boat.

Brought home the beast yesterday. Ill switch the motor to my boat and it should be leaving again next Friday. I’m ending up with the motor free. Little bit of time and effort, but worth it. I had a couple feelers out on the boat/trailer. My buddy I go to CO with crabs a lot...... he’s psyched to have a new trot line machine.

Got 4 fish on 15 lines this morning. 5 I had on a side creek brought my average down. I was 4 for 10 not counting those, which I was happy with. Gonna have to sit tonight out. Hit it too hard this weekend and am whooped.

Lieutenant Dan (boat's name) will fish. Buying this boat was a great decision. I'm sure there will be days I don't like it as much but the inaugural fishing outing was perfect. Caught 50-75 white bass and she made it 10 miles total there and back.

The worst part of buying a boat is that you always want to be out on said boat but you have a job and wife and kids to take care of.
YUP. Gotta watch it or you'll conclude that life is short, what comes after uncertain, and the only sensible thing to do is sit out on this bank of sand...and watch the river flow!

I sit here holding the baby thinking about fishing....I got a question. Are any of u guys setting lines in big rivers were ur line won't reach from bank to bank? Whenever I get the chance to set a line again I was thinking of setting it up the big river along the pilings of a bridge. Crab trap float on 1 end and ? Maybe daisey chain the other since I'm not using the extra to tie to anything? I don't know...just thoughts running thru my head....what do u guys do?

Skinned a lot of catfish off trot lines when I was a teen. Couple of recommendations. If you insist on skinning them first, take a decent size sinker nail and drive it into a tree at a 45 degree angle about collarbone height. Cut the head off the nail at an angle leaving a sharp point with a couple of inches of nail sticking out of the tree. When you are ready to skin, just drive the cat’s head down on the nail underneath the head. That will hold the cat while you skin it. I don’t use the knife to cut the sides of the head, you can grab those “points” with your nippers (skinning pliers to you), bite down on them hard and get a start without having to use a knife, saves a little time. You can skin a ice chest full before quick gets ready with that nail holding them. Works on big ones and small ones alike.

However, if you are going to filet them anyway, no need to skin them first. You can filet them just like a bass, just have to keep the angle small when you are separating the meat from the skin to keep from cutting through the skin. After you separate the filet, you can cut the rib bones off with the knife as well. You will mess up a few until you get the hang of it, but then it’s a breeze and will save you hours if you are filling freezers. Take a look at the cordless battery powered Bubba filet knife. It’s pricey at $169 but you will skin filet like a samurai with that thing. Comes with 4 different blade widths some of which are thin and perfect for filleting. There’s a corded one that’s a little cheaper and you can find them on sale even cheaper. That thing is a “Game Changer”. I know cuz it says so right there on the web site. Ha! Ha! Ha! These recommendations will help you get through a mess of fish in no time.

I trot lined in Louisiana and used hoop nets as a teen when the bayous would get up out of their banks, we ran the lines from tree to tree to tree through the woods along the banks. You tie off to the first tree, then go from tree to tree, going around a tree every so often, keeping tension on the line as you go. We would girth hitch a brick with one of the hook loops between the trees to hold the line down, tensioning the line to keep the bricks just off the bottom. By just going around the middle trees, instead of tying off to them, you will be able to raise or lower the line as the water rises or falls. We would keep the lines around the trees about 6-8 inches below the water. If the water is rising fast, you have to be careful or when you run the line you won’t be a able to reach the line to adjust it. So set it according to the conditions. You could do the same thing piling to piling to piling.

This is a man bridge with concrete piling probably 20+feet in diameter....I don't want to tie to the bridge....I want to put it 10-15 feet away perpendicular to the bridge

It takes some thought....I think the dumbbell weight I made as the anchor with trotline tied and separate line for pulling up and float.... Run the trotline and then drop other weight... But run a long piece of paracord or something thru the hole on the weight before dropping keeping a hold of the paracord yeah ends... Drop weight and paddle away until I can get a good pull... Hopefully making the trotline right between the two weights..release 1 end of paracord and pull thru till it's all back in the boat..

The problem is you won't be able to get a big enough weight in your kayak to keep the line taunt. I tried several times last year because a trotline running perpendicular to a creek or river catches the most fish close to the edges usually. But even a 35lb weight, which doesn't sound like much until you're raising and lowering it over the side of a boat, won't keep a line good and tight.

I haven't run a trotline yet this year. Switched to limb lines and catch more fish with fewer hooks out because I can be more selective about where they go.
