I need to get something help me determine my scent stream…I know people use milk weed but where do I buy some? Or an effective alternative.

I look for it scouting but never seem to find any.

Thanks

My friend raises rabbits and he gives me a Ziploc full of hair if I ask...side by side with milkweed the plant seeds float more freely and seem to travel further but it doesn't grow around here and the fur works pretty much just as well.

I noticed this on my last hunt and wanted to bring it up.....I had just put a new ThermaCELL pad in and it was smoking pretty good...it was floating up and east....the puffer bottle showed up and northeast and the rabbit fur was floating away from me toward the east all pretty much at the same time.....which 1 represent "odor molecules" or whatever u call it better....thermal updrafts maybe not strong enough to lift the little hairs but able to lift smoke/vapor? I have no clue

When all things are considered, nothing is better than milkweed.
Cotton is heavier and just doesnt float as far, I know because I've compared it side by side.
Puff bottles are just one step up from not having anything at all. Powder only shows what the wind is doing a yard or 2 away.
Under the right lighting conditions, milkweed can sometimes be seen for 80 yards or more.
Cattail is pretty good but it really needs to be in a container of some kind and that often requires dealing with a lid...too much messing around with lid management.
Milkweed comes with the best container...the pod itself. Milkweed floaters can be released 1 at a time or dozens at a time. Nothing shows the true size of your scent cone as well as a couple dozen milkweed floaters released simultaneously...can't do that with cotton. And cotton balls need to be pulled apart into individual floaters but milkweed floaters are pre-formed into a nice 1" floater. Cotton just can't compare.
2 things about milkweed...
You have to keep it dry similar to any floater, and you can't pluck/release it while wearing gloves made of fabric. The floaters stick to the glove.
I have plenty of dried milkweed pods, all rigged up with clips to attach them to your coat for quick access with minimal movement.
Check out "Pods for a Cause". Get some quality floaters and donate to charity at the same time.
PM me if you want some.

The lighter the more accurate

The smoke/vapors are the lightest so they should be most accurate

The heat is gone almost immediately so other than an initial very slight rise , it doesn’t matter

But it’ll also dissipate and give less to watch

Milkweed is overall the best combination of visibility and lightweight floating
