Team 2 Thread

My property is about 20 acres with woods and ringed by slue and farm fields. Being a gun hunter, I only ever hunted the south line of the woods because there was no need to go anywhere else.

The winds last night were SSE which forced me to the north end of the woods with me near the NW corner. Off map and the the NW, the neighbor has a food plot so my thinking was they’d come from the slue to the south and head north to the plot.

I had previously scouted the area and new there was a well established trail where I sat. I hated everything else about the setup. There were alot of lower saplings all around with a few gnarly oaks and ash mixed in. The only tree that would work for SRT was a leaning oak next to the trail but tucked into the saplings.

There was one crotch I could throw my line through but it took several tries and had to cut a sapling down in the process. Once the rope was up, I had to do a base anchor. The tree leaned to the NW (the side I was hanging from) and about 24” in diameter which made the platform and gear strap setup a pain. It also only allowed for 2 close distance but otherwise narrow lanes.

Once finally setup, a large flock of grackle flew in and raised holy hell for about 30 minutes. Then the squirrels moved in making a racket along with a chipmunk but otherwise no movement anywhere.

I honestly expected this to just be a scouting sit for a better location tomorrow (today). About 30 minutes until sunset, I heard a different noise directly behind me. Turning around, there were two does coming off the powerlines the exact opposite direction from what I was expecting.

Being as tucked in as I was, they never saw me move to get my bow. Within minutes, she was at most 5 yards from the tree quartering away with me about 18 feet high. With the lighted nock, I knew I hit her right behind the right front leg high but at the angle I knew I hit lungs. The odd thing is I didn’t get a passthrough and watched her run off with the arrow sticking out of her back. She ran 50 yards and dropped.

The arrow had sheared cleanly mid shaft like it was cut. The broadhead did come out her lower opposite chest but never found the other half of the arrow. It wasn’t on the trail and not inside her. Best guess is I double lunged her and cut major vessels since it completely missed her heart but her chest was completely full. Though I could see her, the blood trail was big enough that you could’ve run along it and not lose it.

Very long-winded story but being my first saddle, archery and elevated kill, I’m still stoked and ready for the next one. I hung and caped her last night, processed her this morning, having backstrap medallions for dinner tonight and will finish butchering tomorrow.

That is AWESOME. Congrats man!

Been out all AM, only deer I saw was in the dark on the walk in. Not planning on driving home til the end of the day, currently debating hanging here vs hiking and setting up somewhere else. I'm in an oak flat crisscrossed with deer trails, acorns dropping but not as much as they were a few weeks ago.
well... i ended up seeing the same doe (or at least the same size/ similar area in the dark on the walk out, but that's it. strange because last time i was in that spot i saw about a dozen deer... still learning though. I have resisted, but i feel like i need to invest in some cameras. that and next time i go out,i'm going about 1/4 the distance, no point walking 2-3 miles in to see nothing. well, other than the exercise i guess. anyhow, plenty more season left, not sure when i'll get a chance to go again in the next few weeks, may have to take a day off work and go midweek.

@MNFarmHunter it must be a great feeling that you're figuring out your own property in a new way. i have dreams of owning some acres some day...

Out for a morning hunt. Came into a new area that juts out into standing corn in the dark. Saw two does by the parking lot in the headlights, so hopefully this is a good sign! I couldn’t find any suitable trees in the dark so I jumped into the middle of a giant cottonwood(?) about 6 feet off the ground.

Nothing seen this morning, other than a pine squirrel who was particularly interested in letting the whole woods know he saw me. Marked a great spot on my way out for another time.

Squirrels have been very interested in me this year, often coming within 5 feet before turning around and telling everything what they found. Had a chipmunk friday get too close to my base anchor and was worried he’d start chewing through it.

Last night, made pan fried backstrap medallions which were delicious. Got home today and will spend the remainder butchering and packaging.

Well fellas it’s been a day, first sit at my best farm.. got there super early took my time and circlelrd the property via a gas line right of way… got in the first oak flat… this property is a sieres of ridges that lead to ag on the top and bottom. Mature timber, pretty thick in bottom.. a lot of bedding areas… scouted my way on the flat towards the point. Found an awesome three trunk tree counted 8 rubs on the flat that I could see, deer poop and leaves all disturbed….. feeling real positive… take my time drilling the tree get my predator set. Settle into my dryad… pull my new fatal x crossbow up….

One limb completely snapped and the other splintered… tear my set down and packed up… ran into landowner and talked with her a minute… I didn’t have my Mathews in the truck so called my wife to meet me at another farm but she was running errands with the kids… so I ran home and jumped in a tree at the house… hoping a doe walks by.

An evening sit with a Busch Latte. Even with the problems, it’s already a great day.

Ouch. Hopefully it’s not too expensive of a fix.

ouch! how did that happen to the xbow?

Just blew apart sitting cocked… I have a friend that bought one and his did same thing… checked out some groups on Facebook and it appears to be a big problem… see what they have to say today when they call me back may just return it and buy something else… I get there will be failures but this bow has like 20-30 shots through it and so did my buddies. If they send the same junk limbs I don’t want it lol.

In
other news I had a giant 8 point show up on camera last night.

wow thats crazy. hope it gets resolved to your liking, quickly. do you have a backup to take that boy out with, or waiting on the replacement limbs?

I have a nice Mathews that’s set up so no down time. I’m just way more accurate and it’s way easier with a crossbow… I bought my dad a Excalibur Micro 335 a few years ago too so worst case I will grab that. They just started harvesting so it will be a few weeks before he will hunt.

I haven’t heard from the bow shop yet, if they are just sending the same replacement limbs I’m going to ask them to return it and let me buy something else… Kinda gun shy on them now.

I’m out. Hunting a little tree lot that has standing corn all around. Hoping to catch one coming to feed tonight.

I gotta change something up. I haven’t seen a single deer since October rolled in. September was fantastic, October has been terrible! I’ll be out again on Sunday and gotta figure out a game plan to hit a different piece.
