Team 13 Thread

Found rubs and scrapes Christmas Eve. They closed post before I could hunt that evening. Back first thing this morning. Woods active this morning. A spike chasing a doe around my tree. Another 2 does that I let walk since it was early.

0800 a good buck walked out. I had an awkward shot and was leaned out. Stupid muck boots slipped on my scout and I gracelessly swung around still pivoting with one foot. Buck ran about 15 feet away paused and wandered back in. I had an even more awkward shot since I was just hanging and leaning into the high side of the tree with one foot on a squirrel step. Shot. Missed at a ridiculous distance.

Buck ran about 20 feet and stopped. Black powder smoke clouded all around due to 90% humidity. We walked off why I reloaded. Gone and Out of sight.

Hail Mary time. Pulled out the grunt tube. 2 series and 10 minutes later he shows back up. Beds down 35 yards from me. Turns his head away from me and I had plenty of time.

Best time I’ve had all year in the woods especially since I told the wife my plan and confidence was high.

You called him back in after shooting with a flintlock?! Geesh. That’s awesome lol. Congrats.

Did you have a buck on the board before this one? How many additional points for team 13?

In-line ML.

I’m fairly sure it was the same one. He came from the direction The one I missed was headed. I’ll be going back to see if there’s a twin brother running around.

He’s an eight point so that’s 13 points total? This is the first buck of the year.

Great late season buck! I’ve never got one this late in the year. Good stuff!

So I cracked and bought a deer tag for Washington, season ends on the 31st but I just wanted an excuse to get out. I found elk and black tail on the public by my house but no bucks yet. Actually had a 10 min standoff with a doe following tracks in the fresh snow this morning, she blew and started to walk away so I blew back and stopped her. She turned and walked to about 18 yards and was coming into the only shooting lane I had but as I drew she covered the distance behind the tree fast and caught me drawing. She tan and I got low and ran parallel to her in the thicket and had another standoff for about 5 more min before she walked away haha. Crazy morning.
The pic of me below is just after I put up this cell cam on a trail intersection leading into bedding I found the other day, I walked maybe 10 yards and she was circling down wind to investigate and that’s when the stand off happened. She later cam to investigate.
2 for 5 on outings so far that I’ve seen black tail. Both times doe or groups of doe but no bucks yet. Found some spots today for saddle set ups on small public pieces so maybe doing a climb later in the week.

Congrats on a really nice late season buck @iamcorey !

Got out tonight in the snow but all ground hunting and mainly scouting. Snuck up on some elk but I did find some good deer sign and beds where they were earlier in the day. Jealous I can’t hunt whitetail anymore this year, hope you guys that are still at it can put some down.
Already looking forward to try and fly to my cabin in pa for the rut next year, probably the only whitetail hunting I’ll be doing for awhile.

You guys have been busy! Keep it up!

Weather has been record-breaking hot here. I hunted this morning for the first time since early November. Been fishing mostly. Saw 3 deer and 4 nice gobblers, but not the eight I was hoping for. I've got 2 tags left to fill (well, 5 if you count Mississippi, but that may be a bust) and rut still hasn't even started here yet. Hoping to put 3-4 more points on the board but I may be watching in the wings if the weather doesn't cool down and my interest doesn't heat up. I'm rooting for y'all though!
