I’m going to start rappelling this coming season and would like to some opinions on which is better and why. I currently have a CAYS 2.0 pack that I will be using along with a one stick and a platform when I’m at hunting height. I may also mess around get a complete one stick setup with a platform on top. Either way I’d like to have the best option for carrying my rappel line, linemens belt, Etc. I have never had anything attached to the side my saddle before. I’ve been people use all 3 listed above. I have also seen people use a small pouch that isnt attached to the saddle similar to a sling bag or something do that natural. I’d like to see some of yalls setups to give me an idea. Thanks in advance.

I’m this thread I took some pics of myself with my setup. I also rappel and one stick and use a platow. I use a roll pouch for rappe line management and have a dump pouch on the other side of my saddle for my back up linemans belt, backup ascender and anything else I wanna shove in there. Everyone has a different Batbelt, might have you a while to figure out yours:

Do you use a complete one stick or a one stick and platform?

I one stick and rappel as well. currently I am using a dump pouch on my right side of the saddle. Its big enough to hold my rappel rope and a figure 8 descender with carabiner. On my left side of the saddle I have a two pocket bag that has molly attachments that I keep other things like, my pull up rope that doubles as my rope retrieval cord. My back band. My gear strap. It holds my tether when I'm walking in. As well as a few other items if need be. I'm also in the process of making a roll pouch that I plan on switching to this year to replace the dump pouch. In my opinion I think that a roll pouch is a little better since it keeps all my rappelling needs organized a lot better. However, the same can be done with a roll pouch as long as you pack it in a way that the items you need will be layered in the order that you need them. Honestly its what you like and works the best for you.

How do you like the figure 8 descender? I’ve got a figure 8 and a Mammut Smart 2.0 as well.

I really like using the figure 8. It's smooth, and the way someone on here showed me how to use it without a back up works great. you can even go hands free if you need to.

My roll pouch lasted one night. They suck. They are neat looking and I know us saddle hunters love our little gadgets but they are not better and way less convenient. Simple dump pouch does the job way better. I personally use a Latitude dump pouch but any dump pouch that fits anything will be 10 times better then a roll pouch. Drop out bag.. I mean what's the difference between your rope droping from the bottom of a pouch or just grabing the rope and throwing it down...
Easy answer...K.I.S.S... use a dump pouch.

I'm curious, how did you roll pouch last one night? was it because it was cheaply made or because of how it was used. I am making mine out of a thin leather I agree that a dump pouch will work just fine but things I always need seem to find their way to the bottom of the dump pouch. thats why I am choosing to use a roll pouch

They are a gimmick that's why it lasted one night. Trying to operate that thing one handed is stupid. Dump pouch is just so much more convenient. Not sure how what you need finds its way to the bottom? I wrap up my rope shove it in the pouch and my Madrock lays on top. Always right there. My pull down rope is also my bow pull up rope that is in my left pouch. Ill say it again, if roll pouches were really that great more compines would be making them. They look cool, guys try them, most figure out they are more hassle then they are worth.

in a way I understand what you are saying. I honestly dont mind a dump pouch for my rappel rope and figure 8. I dont use a mad rock or ropeman . I use all friction hitches and I climb with a tether and use a rappel rope to get down. The other bag I use with my saddle isnt a dump pouch its just a small 2 pocket bag i got from walmart. I keep most of my gear in that. My retrieval rope doubles as my pull up rope as well so i understand. I think i might have gotten caught up in the hype because the concept is a cool idea.I never thought about using it with just one hand. That may prove to be an Issue. I wont know how I will feel about using it until I finish mine. Good news is if i dont like it then I wont be out much other than the cost of materials and I could always pay it forward and give it to someone just starting out who may need it. Thanks for your input

I prefer the roll pouch. It allows me to very easily and neatly keep the bottom 30 feet or so of tether wound up and strapped down tightly separately from the top/working 8-10 feet of tether which is coiled up on top of that before rolling the pouch up. I can then easily pull out that working tether portion without having to open the roll pouch up at all. And when I do need to dump the rest for rappel, I haven't had any issues doing it one handed. I also like that the roll pouch is oriented to take up more space along my waist, and doesn't hang down and out as much as a dump pouch. It just seems cleaner to me and less bulk swinging around. That being said, a typical dump pouch is fine. But when given the choice, I will grab the roll pouch first. A lot of that is personal preference, of course. Best thing you can do is try all the different options to see what you like best.

Anyone have a dump pouch they’d be willing to part with?

I plan on adding one sticking and rappelling this year and have been messing around with different methods for carrying/stowing gear. I recently got the idea on here to put the rappel rope in my back pack rather than a dump pouch on my saddle. Has made a huge different in how my saddle wears/stays put and is currently how I plan to store/tote my rappel line. Avoids the additional weight on my saddle and makes better use of my backpack. Recommend trying this out before purchasing a dump pouch, etc.

I cant understand in what world putting the repeal rope in a backpack would be better. Can I get a link to this thread? Hell Im trying to figure out how to carry my one stick so I dont have to mess with my pack at al till Im to hunting height. Id hate messing with my pack for my climbing rope
