So I just bought a WindWalker today for $20 off Craigslist. Im gonna be replacing strap as it feels ok but don’t trust it as it’s been stored in barns for yrs and yrs now. I saw some of the ideas on another thread and think they are great! So looking at the stand has anyone tried to put som kinda mods on platform V that goes against tree for more of a grip? Think if this had some sort of teeth it could really bite the tree even better then it does even with basically a flat sooth piece of aluminum stock. My thoughts are to use this as a hybrid sorta thing more like a saddle platform but still having the option to get it into trees saddles not great for or for just another option in the arsenal. Think this stand was truly ahead of its time by about 15-20yrs But with some mods maybe able to shine much like some of the $500+ options out there.

Great buy, I bought a loc on limit off Craigslist for 10 a few years go and sold it for over 200. Good luck with your endeavors

folks have drilled into the area and put bolts with the threads facing out and into the tree

So I was actual thinking how I could rig up some way to make cables adjustable too with maybe cam buckles?

folks have toyed with using either amsteel daisy chains or amsteel whoopie slings or a combo whoopsie daisy

you could put a strong bolt with washer to outside on platform, securely anchor daisy chain to post, then pick the correct link of the chain to slip over your platform bolt

you can add twists to get distances between links

Awesome I think after a few add on‘s with mods this could be a winner!!!

the daisy chain length adjustment is definitely unexplored territory, so please overbuild it and test very thoroughly on the ground and always step onto the platform with a safety connection to the tree......just trying not to get sued, lol

ps...also inspect it and cover any edges/threads that might saw at the amsteel

when i bought my loc on limit, i replaced every bolt on the stand with grade 8 covered in yellow zinc

No worries here!!! I’ve always understood these are just ideas and possibilities not guarantees!!! I have a great mind for scouting and setting up and I know in my head what would work equipment wise just have a limited imagination on how to pull it off.

Following. I would like to see your mods when you have them finalized.

I picked one up this week with the original back pack along with it. Pretty sweet rig old school bark camo fleece pack. Stands in top shape too.

Funny part about it over the weekend I was talking with Mark from treehopperLLC about ordering an new windwalker from him.

Figured I'd check the local postings online .Just happened to luck into this one.
I tossed on a lonewolf strap with an hook on the end . Works pretty good, feels alot more solid verse the old strap and hook it came with.

That’s pretty much what happened to me too with a bit of a twist. I was more trying to decide between a beast stand(bit to big), a lwcg .5 (was almost hit the check out button), a novix helo (was my choice settling a bit before the price increase) and then a lwcg .75 was gonna be the choice in the end. Helo was my choice at first as it had most of what I wanted and for $200-240 was the best option and savings even though I think the lwcg and beast stands have the overall best functional features then throw in the .5 only weights 5lbs and it’s almost unimaginable to me. Price of helo and a couple pounds would have been a winner but price hike now meant hell spend the extra and get the best. However I remembered using a small loc on in early 90’s and thought geez I’d like one of those again cuz they were much like the new lwcg’s. So I researched them and found them out of stock/discontinued. I hadn’t read the forums on them yet and hadn’t thought to even look honestly. Then got bored and started looking on Craigslist for tree stands thinking I might get lucky and find a steal as quality stands occasionally pop up in my area. Low and behold there was my old stand from the 90’s looking real good. Emailed guy and he was an older gentleman who is in process of moving and can’t climb trees anymore and I snagged it for $20!!! It’s in just about pristine shape other then a little rust on buckle but straps still usable however I believe I’ll be changing it out to a newer cam buckle before season. I’m also looking to make a few other mods like maybe adding some sort of diy stand off type thing for the bottom V. Hoping that may bite into tree a bit instead of the smooth surface that currently relies completely on pressure and weight on top of platform. I’ve used these stands before and have thrown it up a couple times since buying it and it’s very stable but might be a bit of and improvement if I can work it out. Also may try amsteel daisy chains for cable replacements in order to make small leveling adjustments for platform. Not sure if in the end I’ll do anything at all as it works pretty dam good now. If it’s just taking a couple bolts off and trying something to only put original thing back on thats fine it’s only my time. I really do like the stand as my trophy line mini sticks are made to seat onto each other and they are 1in tubes. Hey so happens the back tubes on the WindWalker just happen to be 1in tubes so with a small stagger and seating tight against top seat nuts held down with some gear ties for the moment totally silent. 4 sticks, 1-2 step aider, 1-1step aider and I’m comfortably up 18ft hunting. I have a brand new saddle so truthfully I envision myself using some sort of hybrid saddle set up with the stand. I had bought a wingman platform that I may turn into a one stick so I might have a loc on hang n hunt setup and a one stick setup but I have to try the one stick out before I decide. However $20 old school stand purchased off Craigslist is hell of a deal in end when I was prepared to spend $500-600 for a lwcg!!! Those lwcg’s .5/.75 and beast stands sure do look sexy though and boy I like shine new toys but I also LUV ”Old School” throw backs that just plain work much like my grand dads old 94 Winchester!!!

Sweet deal you ran into there,
I'm not how many sticks I'll run with it. I don't ever hunt very high. Not that I'm afraid of heights or anything just never needed to get up that high. "20'+" .
In the past I've run 2 to 3 sticks I made an set awhile ago with lone wolf components . They work just fine for me. Think they are 16" long ill have to check again .
I may attach some pack straps to the stand and use it that way. I don't drag deer out I so ill have to figure out an way to make the stand able to turn into an Meat hauler .
I have an few ideas I'm going to play around with . Should end up being an nice little rig .

I had kind of the same thought process. LWCG is a bit rich for me. Almost pulled the trigger on the Helo when it was like $204. I had actually came across the Loc On stand website a few years back and saw that they were out of business. So when Mark brought them back I was intrigued. I ordered one from him with the shoulder straps. I'm also thinking of getting the pack because I like that I could hang my pack up and drop the stand out of the bottom to make setting up easier. Just strap my sticks to the outside. I also like the retro aspect.

Ya I’m gonna put some decent straps on mine to but I use a mystery ranch pop up 28 so I will also be able to put it in meat shelf or strap whole thing to outside while using meat shelf for extra cloths. Where I live deer are checked in whole so packing meat out isn’t a thing. Now moose sure they allow that and bears to but this pack is awesome for carrying big loads but also compressing into small pack when size isn’t needed.

I usually don't do this but I'll show you what I came up with,
I made an new seat. Foam on the front bar and foam in the seat.
Lone wolf strap to replace the old strap .
Gave it an paint job , and added some back pack straps from an old military pack .

I have 3 sticks on it currently , but like I said before I don't usually hunt that high. So I may drop one stick and play around with and movable aider I have .

Kinda an neat little set up , just another tool and something to tinker around with . I know their are alot better set up out their. Just something I've been messing around with. Figured I'd let you guys check it out.

i believe it is called the slumper seat (edit: not the one above, one that is commonly sold), which is a very stretchy replacement

it stretches so much that it shifts the weight onto the bar and puts you in a bad posture

i have an original loc on limit and if i need a new seat, i'll just sew one up
