Precision 22lr options

Anyone here into precision 22lr guns and shooting? I have always had a pile of fun shooting my 22s both target and squirrel hunting and really enjoy picking a squirrel off at 50+ yards. I am running a fairly accurate CZ but thinking about setting up a new gun and looking for some thoughts on which way to go. I have a niece getting into competition shooting and her and my brother in law asked if I would like to get into it with them. My thought was to set up a gun to double over to do both competitions but light enough to carry around squirrel hunting. In all the research I have done (which is way more than anyone should do for a 22) I have a few options narrowed down but the $ investing gets ridiculous quick.

- want/wish option is a Vudoo carbon sinister - not much info on guys actually using this gun for hunting

- Kidd 10/22 setup, specifically the supergrade to switch out a heavy barrel for competitions and a light weight barrel for hunting

- build my own from a CZ, Bergara, tika, savage…

I've dabbled heavily into the mid to higher end rimfire stuff over the last couple of years, but not so much on the precision side. If (more when) I get to the precision side, I think I'll probably build around the volquartsen summit bolt action 10/22 with kidd internal parts and bull barrel.

Hard to go wrong with either Kidd or Volquartsen parts in my experience (my way over budget squirrel guns below). I'll follow along and see if anyone has any more precision aligned ideas. Screenshot_20230112_110755_Gallery.jpgScreenshot_20230112_110821_Gallery.jpg

Cool thread, I look forward to following along!

I have never heard of precision .22lr, but with the cost of ammo, I totally understand the appeal. What kind of range are you pushing with a precision set up?

I've got a bergara b14r it's more accurate then me. The inital buy is expensive but I'll go outside and shot 50 rounds at a time normally. The place I live i can shoot 235 yards and hit a 33% ipsc of a tripod without to many misses.
Any of the brands you mentioned will work for starting out. Go to your local gun store and see what they have on the shelf. If your wanting to get into long range you gotta buy a scope made for it other wise there's no point to it. Vortex make good starters scopes but other brands do to.
Best thing to ask is what's your budget?

My gun is by no means a long distance precision gun, just your run of the mill factory CZ. But it holds its own with sub MOA at 50 yards with the right ammo. For squirrel hunting that is better than good in my opinion. I have had fun taking squirrels out to 50 with purposely placed head shots. Beyond that the gun/ammo and mostly my ability limits me to making those shots (not that I don’t try). I have, on the right day with the right ammo placed a few consecutive shots inside an inch at 100 yards with my gun but it is not consistent nor would I expect it to be.

I know people - shooting guns that are well beyond my ability - shoot them regularly with well place shots out to 200 yards that look like my best day 100 yard groups. I have also seen a fella ring a gong 10 shots in a row at 500 meters at my range with his 22, that’s 10 consecutive shots in a row… makes me jealous… but he also has more money into his scope than I have into my whole setup and his hands don’t shake when he is trying to load a clip like mine do.

Before the vudoo and all the custom 22 came around cz was one of the top rifle to buy. You might be surprised what a cleaning and match ammo will do for you. Even just up grading scope will go a long was.
What cz model do you own?

Budget… I’ll ask my wife…

my plan was to steal the scope off of my precision rifle I can’t afford to shoot, which is a vortex Viper 6-24 or I have a PST 4-16 I have been meaning to put on something so to get started I am good to go on the scope.

as far as how much I have to spend on the rifle itself, it’s up in the air. 3k+ for a Vudoo is a hope and dream unless I sell that scopeless precision rifle which is an option I am considering. 2k for a fully setup Kidd is still high but not out of the question, building a gun for 800-2k seems logical but I have known me for a while now and I will always think I should go one step up better than what I did or what I need and a build will likely cost me as much or more than a Vudoo when it is all said and done.

CZ 452-2E ZKM - if you are familiar it has open sights on it which is limiting me on mounting a bigger scope without really xtra rings which moves my eye up to high for the factory stock. I could remove the open sights but I am afraid the squirrels might not like the looks of the gun when I am hunting them.

I have a stock 10/22 that's pretty accurate (relatively speaking, of course), and I'm thinking of sending it off to Connecticut Precision Chambering (link HERE) for an abbreviated tune-up to see where that gets me. If it's good but not great, the likely next step for me is a CZ 457 Pro Varmint. The thought of a super-high-end 22 sounds awesome, but a $2-3k rifle for my purposes (squirrel hunting and long-range dabbling) is pretty ridiculous. Just trying to share my perspective to the extent it's useful.

I've got 2 10/22s and a Marlin... I think 925? Box-mag bolt-action rifle. Very happy with them as rack-grade .22s but haven't traveled down the precision rimfire rabbit hole. When .22LR ammo got tough to find I kinda refocused my attention to archery and reloading, so I never figured out which ammo my bolt gun likes best.

Isn't there a rimfire PRS series?

I wouldn’t say it’s a precision rim fire but I just bought a cz457. They make 457’s with a match grade chamber btw! I’m putting a vortex venom 5-25 on it. Added a area 419 15 moa rail. The trigger on this thing is sick! Can’t wait to shoot it tomorrow.
What you’re talking about is a whole different level! I’m pretty jelly.

If you really want to spend some coin on a performance 22.

What kind of accuracy are you looking for? I just shot that cz and it’s super accurate. Can’t say as to how accurate as it’s only had one type of .22lr ammo through it but it’s looking awesome.

Get a Savage FV and be done with it…unless…

A 10/22 is a lego set and can be made extremely accurate but $$$.

If squirrel hunting or target shooting, I use the FV. I do have a take-down I need to accurize just because.

My Savage fv sr in a Boyds tacticool stock. With Eley match bullets that thing is a tack driver. View attachment 79817
Ugh. I have an FVSR that I never shoot because it has the dumb "Swamp People" Gator Camo. I need to get a new stock or chassis for it, but so far haven't wanted to spend money on it since I have the Ruger rimfires that I have sunk way too much money into. This looks great.

What kind of group are you considering “precision” I’m not that good of a shot and I’m getting under 1/2” at 50 yards pretty easy. Having some that are way less. Even 3,4,5 shot groups. I guess I don’t know what others are expecting. This is with mid range ammo.
I’m getting such good groups that I can’t justify some of the stuff I wanted for the gun at first. Better trigger, new barrel, expensive ammo, all that fun stuff.

i still wanna mess with the headspace on it but man idk I’m afraid to mess it up now
