Would you guys feel safe using this metal carabiner as a quick link. He says it's the same size as a tree stand safety harness carabiner. I use a quick link, but told him I would as you guys.IMG_20230119_171356940~2.jpgIMG_20230119_171415183~2.jpgIMG_20230119_171343871~3.jpg

but he was more concerned with safety
IMO that seems to be more about convenience than safety. Everyone knows that you aren’t going to break a climb rated quicklink. Don’t know how you get safer than that.

I meant more concerned about safety than the weight of it, but yea, I agree with the convenience part. Trying to make something he has on hand work as opposed to buying a proven tool.

Should be overkill. Like any carabiner, mind how you load it. If he’s just rappelling then yes it’ll be fine.

Yea he is just testing out rappelling to see if he likes it. I gave him an old rope of mine to try it out, but didn't have a quick link on it. Either way I told him just to order a quick link and if he decides he doesn't like it I will buy it off of him or just sell it with the rope.

Thanks guys

I still haven’t understood why people are trying to replace a quick link. It works, it’s small, not heavy, and if you’re using the correct one it’s rated. If it’s because you don’t won’t to screw open or shut which only takes a couple seconds then That’s just lazy. Stop trying to invent the wheel.

Agreed. This experimenting with tethers away from known safe solutions makes me nervous.

I agree with you guys. I advised him against it, but to each their own

Waayyy too heavy for me!

Wait …. A carabiner is too heavy? We’re worrying about the weight of a carabiner now? If ever get concerned about a carabiner too heavy, I think it’ll be time to give up hunting. If I can’t carry a carabiner, I don’t how I’d ever haul a deer out of the woods.

I think we’re going overboard with the ultra light stuff

Mike, it's a STEEL carabiner on a tether! :screamcat:

It would constantly be falling down the tree... :poutingcat:

lol. It doesn’t. I use a metolius steel carabiner. No issues whatsoever. None.

How heavy do you think it is? Ten pounds? It’s just a carabiner. Been using it for a few years now.

Well, some might think this is ALOT of overkill, but a rock climbing friend suggested this one to me, & I have to say that I really like it for the quick link on my rappell line/tether. Because of it's "twist," I'm always able to keep the gate away from the tree, and the extra weight makes it a "1 throw" evolution around big trees, which I seem to favor. The weight also helps break the hitch free once I'm on the ground.

Looks awesome, but pretty heavy. I'm sure it opens easier. Be careful swinging that around a tree....at almost half a pound....you might knock yourself out
