I guess nostalgia got hold of me and so I went and got some aluminum arrows to play with.

This particular rig is a 21" riser with a set of my border limbs in medium length at #52. I draw 29" and get #55

I am shooting 200 grain tips so I'm thinking 2219s or 2315s at 30ish inches.
I use simmons safari broadheads which weight 205 grains.

Anyone out there still shooting aluminum with any suggestions?

With the price of carbons so high anymore aluminum doesn't sound half bad but the truth is they won't hold up forever.

No idea but since the first deer I arrowed snapped my carbon arrow, they don’t last too long either.

Are 22s or 23s diameter larger than the broadhead ferrule? Shaft diameters that are larger than the ferrule are very bad for penetration.
It's been a long time since I looked at the charts...would 20 or 21 series be stiff enough? 2020s or 2117s??

I'm going to try and tune one of my longbows to XX75's. 2216, 2117, and 2016 is what I'll probably start messing with. I'll probably go back to 125-150 grain heads up front with the 10-12gpi built into the shafts.

My best guess is 2315 will come in close to 600 grains.
I found some to try.
I'm going to pick them up tomorrow.
Start with a half dozen.

Tom one of the last aluminums I put thru a deer was a 2219. I was shooting heavy for caliber from the jump. Most of the guys were in love with 2117s for the speed.
Anyhow back that arrow. It was a pass thru from about 18 feet up, about 15 yards, managed to stick in the ground.
I got down and retrieved the arrow and to my surprise the arrow was perfectly arched like a banana.
I remember it well. I made a decision then and there to try carbon as it was said that they were no longer splintering umbrellas inside deer.

I generally agree about the penetration aspect but I think the 2315 is what is available now that he should be able to tune with his combo of draw weight, length and chosen head. 2315 should be close enough to be able to manipulate the back end of the shaft and get it dialed.

I believe Easton has a spine conversion chart for their Aluminum arrows somewhere on their website

As you probably know by now, them Borders limbs generally will take you up a spine or three. Been through a few sets of the Covert Hunters.

My Satori likes easton aluminum 500s. I put a 100 gr insert and 200 gr cutthroats on them with 28 in length and 5 in feathers.

I switched back to aluminum four years ago. My Widows & my Schafers like 2016's, 30 in. with 190 gr Swamp Sharks up front. My bows are all around 45#-48# @ 28" or 29". I keep 2 carbons in the quiver for stumps or squirrels when things get slow. For those, I use GT Traditional 500's, usually buy the blemished shafts from ebay.
