Smokey smelling pack

Pre
I recently bought a pack off of the classifieds. When the box arrived, I could smell what smelled like cigar smoke. I opened the box and the smell was overwhelming. Pack was in perfect shape except for the smoke smell. I asked the seller if he smoked and he said no. Hmm. I ran it though my ozone bag twice. Didn’t help. I washed it with scent free soap. Didn’t help. I soaked it in baking soda and water in my bath tub over night. That might have helped a little. Then I hung it up outside for 2 days. It still smells like smoke. Does anybody have any tried and true ways to get rid of the smoke smell?
Pretty sure I bought some gear from the same place lol. Best way to get rid of the smell would be take up smoking, after about 6 months of that you won’t even notice it

Cover it with a more pleasant flavor of smoke, like a hardwood campfire?

I've heard of people smoking their hunting gear to introduce a smoke cover scent. The thinking is, there are enough forest fires and woodstoves and fireplaces that smoke doesn't seem to spook deer. Never tried it, but might be worth an experiment.

Yea I causally smoke my clothes by a campfire

I thought about that but I live in South Carolina. Not many wood stoves down here. Now mosquitos, we have those.

After doing a de-scenting regimen i put my clothes / gear in a sealed container with conifer boughs - balsam fir and eastern red cedar are my favorite. Don’t leave them in there too long, maybe a day or two, let the gear air out and repeat a few times.

I would return it and ask for your money back. The dude was misleading.

If you need it quick, ozone.

If it's just going to be in storage until next season, hang it somewhere it can keep air flow moving in and out with all the pockets open.

Not sure it will help any more than what you’ve tried but pour baking soda over pack and in the entire thing(Heavy) place in a sealed trash bag for several days with even more poured in the bag. Baking soda is a natural smell neutralizer/absorber. Check to see after several days clean off and repeat if you notice it’s working. Good luck!

OZONE. The previous owner of my work truck rode everywhere with his dog. I asked some detailers at used car dealerships and every single person said ozone. So everyday after work an ozonics machine went in until the battery died on the lowest speed setting. After about 10 days I could not smell dog anymore. Throw a machine inside the pack and hang it in a tree for a 6 hour cycle. Most quality packs are waterproof from the outside in, but breathable from the inside out. Good luck!

Not sure if I've mentioned it before elsewhere. Gotta be careful with baking soda. It will scratch your optics.

I bought a tent at an REI garage sale that had been chain smoked in at Bonaroo for a weekend then returned. This was before I was into ozone but I bought a product called mirazyme which I mixed with warm water in the bathtub and a dunked the tent and rainfly and let them soak. The enzyme in solution breaks down scent molecules somehow without destroying gear or dwr coatings. It worked like a charm and I still use the tent years later

I had a couple of bags that smelled like cigarette smoke. I mean that stinks. I got big bucket , a little box of baking soda, let is soak for hours swishing around here and there. - I used 1/2 a box each time.. Rinse really good , let dry. Check smell. I did this about 3 times and finally got the smell out.

Vinegar is acidic and is good for keeping color on a garment that is why they say add vinegar to a solution when doing tie dye.

Try it.

I know you said you used baking soda, but use a lot, like I would use over a half a box per load. That was my scent control system for a long time. (Wife thinks she knows a better way now.)

And I've seen baking soda take out some severe odors.

Also, look up activated carbon powder, mix with water and spray on the pack. Try to find the carbon powder not linked to hunting since it will be marked up 1,000%.

But if you only trust the hunting industry Carbon Synergy makes a 4oz bottle for about $10, minus shipping, which isn't terrible.

Hope this helps.

Funny you suggested this. I was trying to think outside the box… I was thinking about a container of activated carbon from a pet store or aquarium shop. Soak the pack with the carbon. Not sure it would work but I know carbon in a filter will remove some nasty smells and medications from a fish tank.
