Hello all... I'm a relatively new hunter (4 seasons) and am in Northern California. I've been lurking around the forum for a little while, trying to learn without being a PITA (pain in the a**). I've never done any type of hunting from a tree, but a saddle seems to be the smart way to go. Unfortunately I'm stuck with public land, so a fixed stand is out of the question anyways. I've tried to find other northern ca saddle hunters here, but I must not be kicking over the right rocks. But, I'm trying to find someone with some insight into saddle hunting in the northern socialist republic of CA. I'm curious about successes, failures, time on task, etc. Is it worth the effort? I don't think I've ever talked with another tree hunter from CA.

Welcome to the site.
There’s another member from Sacramento area on here. I grew up in Tulare before executing our escape plan. I never hunted from a tree in Ca. I was just getting in to the thought of elevated hunting when we moved to Tn. I would soak in the information here about saddles and spend time on Jesses outdoors (JHO) if that website is still around for information about Ca hunting. It was the premier site back close to 2000 or so. I haven’t visited the site in years. There’s a bunch of top notch guys there and there all in Ca. You might find someone to show you the ropes.

See you in a tree, Ricky

There are a few guys in CA.

This forum has over 11,000 members. I'd guess most would say they've had success with the saddle. I'm sure you could too. It's very versatile. And fairly easy to resell if you decide it isn't for you. Good luck, and welcome.

I spent some time in Mendocino Co. and farther north in Klamath National Forest (Yreka and Happy Camp) quite a few years ago. Very cool area! Sorry I can't give ya insight on saddle hunting there but I do remember seeing a decent amount of deer there. Were they possibly mule deer or blacktail? Hunting mule deer around here is usually more of a spot and stalk endeavor and wouldn't seem too productive out of a saddle.

Welcome from WI. I used to think public land archery hunting was a negative. Now I find it more enjoyable vs private land hunting. Embrace it. Finding success on pressured public parcels is very rewarding!

Welcome from Maine! Can‘t promise you will like the saddle, but this forum has a ton of info and good people. And the BS factor on here is super low, which is nice.

I hunt WI too and over the last 10 years or so started hunting public in ways i never would have prior. I have found it FAR more enjoyable than hunting the same old fields and ridges on the private I have access to and Ive actually been seeing bigger deer on the public.

Prior to ten years ago id have thought someone was lying if they told me they enjoyed public more due to all those negative stereotypes. Just gotta hunt where others arent.
