    Call your shot!

I'm going to kill a doe with Dad's crossbow, and maybe one with his old sidelock ML.

What’s your vane color of choice?

I use yellow and orange, with white wraps for hunting. I used that combo when I started bowhunting and never felt the need to change. It doesn't matter anyway now since I use lighted nocks. For target shooting, I've gone to solid green, with chartreuse nocks. It seems to stand out best against...

What do you consider the most important out of these?

Based on how much money I spend on it, clothing is definitely number one. I have my bow, .270, and the muzzleloader, and all of them are pretty basic. But now that I have them, I barely spend anything on them. And the equipment I use doesn't change much from hunt to hunt. I might change the set...

    Naming bucks

My brother and I usually name them after we kill them. There is one buck that we both saw last year we call "Tall Boy". Another that shows up on our cameras within a half mile of a parking area we call "2X4" because he has such an unusual rack. He wouldn't have a name except that he's so easy to...

    They are falling!

Two weeks ago, the trees around our place in OK were dropping leaves, and our post oaks were dropping tiny acorns (smaller than pea size) but it was because it was so dry. Then we got 2.5 inches and they perked back up. I haven't seen anything dropping acorns, but a few of the red oaks where I...

New hunting tactics for this season

Sometimes half-assing works. The only deer I killed last year was on a day I worked up a sweat paddling way down the river, taking in a long circle route to come in from the backside, froze my butt off in the morning, was sweating in the afternoon, and gave up. I went back to camp, walked across...

New hunting tactics for this season

I'm going to try hunting more mid-day, especially in November and December. During hunting season I seem to get more shooter bucks on camera mid-day than early morning and evening. I got a decent 10-point three times last December between noon and three, on a trail less than 100 yards from a...

    Why don't yall 2TC?

Is it significantly easier to 2TC on smaller trees? I just attempted my first climbs on my "test tree" here by the house. It's maybe 20 to 22" diameter, and I'm having a hard time getting my leg around when I move the top tether.

Radiographs of 38 deer shot with lead bullets, showing extensive fragmentation

Sounds like you may have taken a few courses in economics. I agree, eventually all lead ammo needs to be phased out. The timeline for that is debatable. It should start with voluntary changes by hunters. I switched to all copper bullets (TTSX) for my .270 after finding a lead fragment in a...

    Broadhead vs insert weight?

Pretty much exactly what I was going to say. I shoot the 200 grain Cutthroat and have no issues with them. They're easy to sharpen, and don't bend or come apart passing through a deer. The only one I've ever shot at a critter and not been able to reuse was the one that I lost in a hog I didn't find.

Thought this was a really interesting podcast on scent

The comparison between dogs and deer isn't relevant. One is trying to avoid the source of the scent, the other is trying to move toward the source. Imagine you're part of a crew fighting wildfires. You got dropped off at the wrong point, and your communication equipment has failed. Someone says...

    Finally a perfect shot

Congratulations! Thank you for sharing. I wouldn't have thought the heart could be hit without hitting lungs, especially from an elevated position. You really have me fired up and ready to go, and we still have two months to wait!

Do you think mapping companies look at your waypoints?

I've also wondered the same thing about guys looking into my electronics when I take the boat in for service. Are they looking at my waypoints for brushpiles and such? I'm not too concerned about it. Most of my spots are known community holes anyway. My OnX waypoints would be a different matter.

What's your strategy for marking your waypoints to a preset tree using reflective markers?

I mark a tree in OnX, and snap a picture of it from the side I plan to approach from, sometimes two sides if I think I could come in either way. There's nothing left in the woods for anyone to know I've been there. I can generally recognize the tree in the dark with my headlamp, and it also...

Anyone wash their saddle like JE?

I haven't washed my saddle yet, but am considering doing it before the season. But I do spray it down pretty heavily with one of the scent killer sprays a couple times a year, and lightly before I use it each time out. So far it seems to be working.

    What am I doing wrong

I had this same thought Saturday while out setting up cameras. I walked through a few places and thought "fifteen years ago, I'd have been prepping trees here". One prime example had a few trails, a subtle ditch from the upper level to the lower level where the walking was easier, and there were...

    Climbing Small Trees???

I'd do it, as long as the tree is healthy, and keeps its diameter high enough.

Jokes and Memes - NO POLITICS

Hunting isn't a hobby. It's a lifestyle. If it were a hobby, they'd have an archery section at Hobby Lobby.

    Stinky Question

I've never had any problem with deer smelling my saddle gear. I always spray it down with Scent Killer or a similar product before I hit the woods. I do give it a pretty heavy dose once before the season, and maybe another if I did something really unusual, like a really long walk that got me...

    The Good? Old Days

This reminds me that I also had a stand that was just an 18" piece of 2x12, with a v-notch cut in each end. I had to have a climbable tree with a fork at hunting height, so there were very few places I could use it. It was made specifically after I found one of those trees. Of course, there...
