    New strings surprised me

Twisting cables shorter increases poundage and adds draw length. That's where the increase in your speed came from. To the OP, increased speed isn't the reason you're shooting 6 to 8 inches higher.

Do you track your hunts? I want to see them!

I've kept a hunt journal off and on but have been steady with it the last 6 seasons. It's interesting to compare year to year and remember past hunts. 2023-2024 bow season: 24 morning hunts 36 evening hunts 160 does seen while on stand 54 bucks seen 10 "shooter" bucks seen 17 blank hunts...

Most deer harvested in one day?

We're lucky to have unlimited doe tags in most of the counties I hunt. I've doubled many times and shot 3 once but as long as I live, I'm sure I'll never shoot 5 in one sit again. That was a combination of hunting a thick spot that was eat up with deer plus me being young and mad at them. I...

    The Piled-High Club

You may not see many replies to this since it's early November! 1) These days most guys shoot plenty well enough on targets to kill a pile of deer. It comes down to executing under stress and shot selection. Most of my bad shots I rushed even when there was no reason to be in a hurry. I'd be...

    Bow Emergency Need Help

Cut it back, burn the tag ends and go hunt. He's got 19 more strands, it's not going to explode. Replace it after rut.

100P&Y deer, MORE P&Y World Records than ANYONE

I saw a similar scene at the same Indiana show probably 10 years ago. Chuck gave a seminar to a nearly empty crowd. Later I saw him sitting alone at a folding table with his books for sale. There was a line of grown men going past his table who were waiting to get an autograph from some unknown...

    Best Dog for the Job

I'm not real familiar with him but he sells a hide drag kit. Most veteran trackers will tell you to get away from hide or liver drags relatively early on in training. It's so much scent contact with the ground, it's not realistic to what they'll experience on an actual track. Lots of random...

Podcast with The Ashby Bowhunting Foundation

I totally get it. I've made my share of poor decisions over the years bowhunting and am constantly trying to improve. Again, I'm not proud of that scenario but I bring it up because it's worth reviewing. I've had more deer duck hard that were unalert than ones head up looking my way. Had a late...

Podcast with The Ashby Bowhunting Foundation

Here's a real world scenario. These are screen grabs from video of a buck i shot. 33 yards (near the limits of how far I'll shoot deer), alert, head up. Aim point was my pin low on his heart, windage in line with the small dark vine hanging over his back, elevation was at the edge of mowed...

    Best Dog for the Job

Off lead gives a lot of advantages but between baying injured deer, water and snakes, you'd probably want to avoid the smaller breeds. Blue lacey, black mouth cur, Catahoula, there's no shortage of hound types that would do what you want well. GSP's and labs may be more versatile when it...

    Best Dog for the Job

What state are you in? Depending whether you're in an on or off lead state would have some bearing on what breed you use for tracking. Also keep in mind the off season is way longer than tracking season so pick a breed that fits in with your lifestyle all year. My wife tracks with a wire...

    Favorite seldom discussed deer food

Hedge apple leaves. The leaves are usually totally smoked while on the tree below the browse line but when they start falling in late October it's a draw and often near cover/ bedding. Deer will smoke other fallen leaves like sugar maple, but hedge apple tends to be much more concentrated.

    2nd Most Overrated Deer Food

Our persimmons seem like a real slow burn from my experience in KY. Some trees will begin dropping in mid- late September and often still be holding some fruit well into December. Deer eat them, but there's not the sense of urgency like when a white oak is real hot. I don't remember ever...

    Archers Helping Archers

I spent 8 years working in a very busy archery shop and there is so much truth in this. Keep in mind that it's often not a nuts and bolts fix to improve arrow flight. The shooter is easily your biggest variable. People want to buy the fix but working the kinks out of form is a common issue...

New compound bow hunter - leveling the bow

It matters but it's probably way down on the list of reasons we miss. Easy enough to test out. Intentionally cant your bow at a given yardage while practicing. It'll surprise you how much cant it takes to move your point of impact at 20 yards.

    Shot placement article

There's definitely lots of variables that can't be expressed on that 2d grid (actual hit location, shot angle, penetration, etc.) that would affect the outcome of a recovery. BUT, poll 100 seasoned dog trackers on what hits they recover and which ones they don't and the answer would largely...

    Asbell Wool Anorak vs Pathfinder

It has crossed my mind, just didn't know how much shrinkage to expect from a wash and dry cycle. Don't want to wind up with a belly shirt.
