2018 Deer Contest Discussion

What was the entry cut off? I wish my Mantis would get here. Tuesday morning I'm hoping to smoke a nice buck I've seen a couple times. Good luck to you all.

Ok @redsquirrel , I figured out the stakes of the deer contest!

Winning team gets to pick the pictures, and/or pose for pictures, for the men of saddlenhunter calendar.

Losing team has to display it in their homes until next years contest.

Let’s do it!
You're awfully interested in seeing the men of saddlehunter calendar...
Just saying.

@BCHunter what a great buck!
Deserves some more discussion in this thread :)

Haha, alright, I'll talk!

My supervisor and I started our "Buckstaches" a few days ago, and my wife thinks it's ridiculous that I'll have a mustache in our first baby pics if I don't shoot a buck. So on Sunday at church she said the baby is just waiting till I shoot a buck, then it'll be ready :)
That day I got into the woods at 2:30, it had already rained most of the day, and the radar didn't look good. I walked into where I had shot my buck last year(made famous on Saddle Hunter Podcast). I hunted it last year on November 12, and at that time the scrapes and rubs looked like they were getting old, so I was hoping to get it while it was fresh. The spot didn't disappoint. There were scrapes the whole way, and one spot with 4 around one tree. This place is a jungle with all the briars, and I have to take deer trails in, with little islands of openings. I accidentally walked past where I wanted to hunt, and thought I screwed up an entry route at a big intersection, but after I set up 75 yrds from last year down came the rain. It down poured for about an hour, but I was riding a high because I knew this place could produce.

A few minutes after the rain died down I saw a spike feeding in the distance, and at first I thought how I should really put meat in the freezer since this could be my last time out for a while, but luckily he never came close. 30 minutes later 3 small does seemed to catch my ground scent where I had walked past my setup, they walked away before deciding it was safe and came through. Had one been mature, it would have died as they slowly meandered through. About an hour before legal shooting light, it began to get real dark, I pulled up the radar and saw that another band was on it's way. It was now or nothing. I had been practicing every shred of restraint in my body, there is nothing more that I like to do than get that rattle out and let loose. I've only ever called in a 6 point, but right now I'd be extremely happy with that, so I let her rip.

I grabbed my bow, and put my other hand in my pocket to keep it warm, and almost immediately hooked the thumb trigger on my saddle. I watched in horror as my release fell off the string and tumbled 17ft to the ground. I frantically dug through my bag and got my backup release hooked up.
Soon I heard some twigs snapping from where the does came through, and the spike walks out. Moral dilemma shoved in my face! Meat in the freezer or believe in this amazing place? He followed the path out of my life. Less than a minute later I hear more brush snapping and continuous grunting.
He was on a mission, on a line to those does. He came from 8 yards to my right grunting the whole time, but I didn't have a shot till he was at 20yrds quartering away. I stopped him and sent my arrow. It looked good, but came out of him funny. He hopped of, not on a sprint, I hope I made a good shot. As I was packing up it really started raining, but the first 20 ft of the blood looked good, so I dropped of my gear at the car.
After I started tracking, the blood started to pour out, and I lost all worry. He ended up going about 100 yrds. My 9 month pregnant wife brought my deer cart from home, and I made the journey back. 2 years, 2 sits, 2 bucks. I like this spot.

Here's the blood trail and recovery:

What...... is that a fleece (material) saddle? Love it and not too shabby of a buck either. Congrats on a nice trophy!
Thanks Dave! Haha, the woobie is a silent killer. I'll have to bring it out for special hunts after I get a Mantis.

That was the first fleece saddle I have seen. If I remember right it had amsteel sewn into the perimeter. Glad to see it’s holding up and you’re still killing deer with it.

Kind of, 2" webbing sewn to the fleece as connection points for the bridge... Maybe it inspired the mantis with the amsteel dog bone sewn in as a bridge? Haha, this thing is as good as it was 2 years ago. 4 kills, 2 bucks and 2 does :)

More discussion, no problem - Great haircut bro!
Haha, I was told it skipped a generation... That's a lie, both grandpa's had more hair when they passed than I do now. But my dad was bald since before I was born. I was losing it when I was 17... I think it's just nature's way of keeping the playing field level, way too handsome with a full head of hair, would be cheating :)
