2018 Team 5 Thread

Just got the “supposed” okay to do a 3-4 day hunting “mini-trip” each week of my 5 weeks off, so that should set me up for some success. I just have to execute now. I don’t think I will be doing any real distance trips, but I won’t be driving back and forth each night, and I will get 6-8 sits to figure out how a property is working before I have to go home again.

Dudeeeee! That is some serious antler porn right there!

Archery season underway up here in MN. Will be hunting out of aero evolution all year. Lucky to have a family farm to hunt on in the south eastern portion of the state that is prime deer habitat. Looking to put a big one on the board for team 5! Also, you guys need to get the deercast app. It's great and tells you good days to hunt based on weather. Wired to hunt podcast 229 did a whole episode on it if you guys want more information.
X2 on Deercast. It's awesome, and it's free this season. I have limited time for hunting, so I hunt every oppurtunity, regardless of conditions. However, with the Deercast app, I'll more easily be able to decide which days to hunt my A spots, and which days to hang back and go to my B or C spots. I'm trying to hunt each location only once or twice. First sit, best sit, right?

Can’t wait to head to Missouri - I intended on scouting more than hunting, but this cool snap ought to have em crawling like ants. Packing all my gear just in case I find the good stuff. Will have bow in hand regardless.

I couldn’t have gotten more lucky with the timing of this front - boots hit ground Friday around 2pm - right as the front rolls in

So, my little girl (2 years old) woke up from a nightmare as I was heading out to hunt this morning. By the time I calmed her down and got her back to sleep, I was running late. No way to make it to my early morning spot in time. So, I did some still hunting that led to a lot of scouting. 3.1 miles of scouting, according to OnX. I'm glad it turned out this way, though. I found a draw that is FULL of White Oaks that are just starting to drop. The draw feeds down to a river bottom where I unexpectedly found a large marsh area. The marsh has a ton of 5-6 feet tall grass interspersed with small trees. Looks like prime bedding habitat. There are tons of trails throughout, and a lot of them leading up the draw to the Oaks. The funnel that is formed by the draw is only 50-60 yards wide, and I can hang right in the middle.
So... Does this sound like a solid plan?
Stay out until the acorns really start dropping, then hunt the funnel between the marsh and the draw in the evening. Try to catch them going from bed to acorns.
Another question, I've got a few creek bottoms I'm going to be hunting. Do you guys hunt creek crossings, similar travel corridors, and pinch points much in early season? Is it a waste of time? Sorry for all of the questions. I'm new to this, but I'm trying to learn.

Sounds like a solid set up either way. I usually like those creek crossings and water sources in the early season when temperatures are still making them drink lots. Those acorns will be great now as well, get in between the beds and food if you can without getting busted

I'll be out tomorrow rain or shine, 8 days 2nd shift straight with Daddy daycare 1st shift...so hopefully I'll stay awake. If it's brown it's down tomorrow (except Young bucks) freezer is empty, and 5 points.

I had 30mins between drop the little one off and heading to work to power scout a new public spot like completely new, just finished the parking area new not a single vehicle has been in there.

It's a smaller tract but has a plot of soy beans some grass I couldn't ID yet and I found a large persimmon tree that is ripe and dropping. Pretty excited to get to hunt land that hasn't been hunted hard for a long time as it was a purchase from a nature conservancy that held the land until the state could pony up the dough.

I might get 1 day to hunt Sunday or Monday, then I’ll be out of town for work for 10 days. After that... I have 3-4 whole days a week until thanksgiving...... bring on the venison!!!

I'm chompin at the bit for Oct. 1st to get here. What do you think I should hunt opening evening "guaranteed does" or a nice 8 I've seen and think I can put a move on?

Well I went as soon as my wife got back from her morning workout, got there at first light. Weather was foggy, light rain all AM, winds ENE, cooler than it has been recently, so I crept down the trail that popped out into the field near the persimmon tree that is loaded and dropping. Down across a creek and to a trail crossing where I found an old shed that I would guess was from a 2 year old, its been on the ground for probably two seasons. So I thought to myself hopefully he is still in here. I set up on the downwind side of the trail crossing, thermals were carrying my scent uphill to the North.

Nada, so around noon I got down went back to the truck and had lunch and though about what I should do with the next 3 hours before picking up my child from the sitter. I decided to drop off my pack and still hunt/ scout. This is what I found:
Scout Map.png

-This is a 70-90 acre tract, there is a joining hunting land on the southeast but getting to that area is a 5 mile hike without extra permission.
-I hunted that northern most trail off the field yesterday.
-Green Blobs are oak stands with most white oaks.
-There is serious sign on the southern most trail and a persimmon in the woods! This will be my next sit.
- The bedding area in the center is likely a buck on his rub line from here after leaf drop he maybe able to see into the field.
-Those 3 "!" points are 60% slopes with rhododendron and mt laurel.
-Other than an flagged line which is several years old on a old logging rd I found a single human boot track. I think the flagging links up with that 5 mile trail in from the south so that could be a future access trail/fire-line planned.

All in all it was a fun productive day.
