I'll be out tomorrow rain or shine, 8 days 2nd shift straight with Daddy daycare 1st shift...so hopefully I'll stay awake. If it's brown it's down tomorrow (except Young bucks) freezer is empty, and 5 points.
I had 30mins between drop the little one off and heading to work to power scout a new public spot like completely new, just finished the parking area new not a single vehicle has been in there.
It's a smaller tract but has a plot of soy beans some grass I couldn't ID yet and I found a large persimmon tree that is ripe and dropping. Pretty excited to get to hunt land that hasn't been hunted hard for a long time as it was a purchase from a nature conservancy that held the land until the state could pony up the dough.
Well I went as soon as my wife got back from her morning workout, got there at first light. Weather was foggy, light rain all AM, winds ENE, cooler than it has been recently, so I crept down the trail that popped out into the field near the persimmon tree that is loaded and dropping. Down across a creek and to a trail crossing where I found an old shed that I would guess was from a 2 year old, its been on the ground for probably two seasons. So I thought to myself hopefully he is still in here. I set up on the downwind side of the trail crossing, thermals were carrying my scent uphill to the North.
Nada, so around noon I got down went back to the truck and had lunch and though about what I should do with the next 3 hours before picking up my child from the sitter. I decided to drop off my pack and still hunt/ scout. This is what I found:
-This is a 70-90 acre tract, there is a joining hunting land on the southeast but getting to that area is a 5 mile hike without extra permission.
-I hunted that northern most trail off the field yesterday.
-Green Blobs are oak stands with most white oaks.
-There is serious sign on the southern most trail and a persimmon in the woods! This will be my next sit.
- The bedding area in the center is likely a buck on his rub line from here after leaf drop he maybe able to see into the field.
-Those 3 "!" points are 60% slopes with rhododendron and mt laurel.
-Other than an flagged line which is several years old on a old logging rd I found a single human boot track. I think the flagging links up with that 5 mile trail in from the south so that could be a future access trail/fire-line planned.
All in all it was a fun productive day.
