Live from the saddle on the opener. Snuck into the middle of a 10 year old cut in a grove of oaks left behind. No acorns though. Buck bed with a small rub beside it 10 yards away. Thick as heck. Have 2 shooting lanes. Wind perfect. Always struggle to concentrate this early, early season just not my favorite time but so great to be in a tree again.

Obligatory saddle selfie.

Opening day in NY was great, passed a young 6. Follow suit with the saddle selfie.

Ok boys, nice cold front moving across the east tomorrow and Friday, let the bodies hit the floor. I got Friday off work and I'm doing an all day stake out in a great pinch!

Drop'em! Hope you fare better than I yesterday. Black powder opened up so I sat one of my hotspots before they get too pressured by firearms folks and since the wind was good.

Sat from dark 30 to noon above a trail crossing under a 50+ft persimmon tree that was loaded and dropping. These are heavy used trails that lead to a soy plot and the acorns are barely falling here still but I didn't see anything I'll try it in the evening if I get a chance but they might just be nocturnal in my area right now.

Well fellas I almost had doe number 2 last night. Everything played out perfect just like I had set up. 24 yds slight quarter away. I new she was gunna catch my wind right on the field edge but I had to wait for her to get to it because of all the brush. She go my wind and stopped to sniff it out. When she stopped I let one go, but she jumped the string good. Ended up hitting her high in the meat. Not a lick of blood not even on the arrow, just a little meat tissue and hair. She ran 50 yds then just started walking. I gave her an hour then got down to check out the arrow. She wasn't bleeding at all, didn't seem to hurt, and I knew that it wasn't a good hit so I knew i wouldn't find her, but I owed it to her to look. So I walked the deer trails and no blood no running tracks after 50 yds no body no nothing. Hoping that she doesn't die of infection.

Looking back on everything I don't know what I would have done differently. Aimed lower third, waited for good shot. I guess the only thing I can think of is I could've been 1 tree over and 6 feet higher in that tree and I could have shot over that brush when she was unalert. Then maybe she wouldn't have jumped the string. Just one of them deals I guess.

Hey guys, I found the bed of one of my target bucks Saturday morning. I had a good idea where he was but couldn't get into it without spooking him so I waited. Saturday brought heavy rain and a light south wind, perfect for an access by way of a drainage ditch on the north side of the bedding. I slipped in and set up within 40 yards of a scrape just outside of the marsh and waited for the sun to rise. It was perfect. At about 7:45 he showed up, tucked inside of some thick cover and slowly made his way toward me. He turned broadside behind a tree and started to move, I drew, camera rolling and everything and as he stepped into the opening at 40 yards his speed picked up and he jumped through a deadfall outside of the suspected bedding and confirmed my suspicions. He laid in his bed right in front of me and left me no available shot! I was shaking like a leaf and amped up for the kill and then had to calm down and wait, and wait for about an hour and a half when he stood up and exited just as he had arrived, intact, not bleeding and still sporting an amazing ten point rack with a third main beam on his right side.
I'm going back this week to try to get us some more points on the board.

Here's a late summer pic of him.

Is that a double main beam, or a jacked up brow tine?

Should be sneaking out for first la hunt tomorrow. Got some new gizmos to get used to out there so may as well do so where I can score us some points. By the way, is anyone gonna join me and letemgrow in the effort?

I’m coming down with a cold...front, I think I’d better not go to work tomorrow. Pretty sure I’ll be joining you guys. Good luck fellas!

I'll be out in the evening.

I left 5 points on the table yesterday evening. Too hot and its a PIA to shoot a doe on a work night. Plenty of season left.

Lost one and missed one. New setup season has begun men

It happens to everyone at some point. Hate it for you, I know the feeling. We just have to get back in the saddle (punny, I know) and keep hunting. We try to learn from our successes and our failures. Sometimes what we learn is that, even when we do everything right, things can go wrong. We're dealing with living things that have minds of their own, that are cagey as hell, too. Good luck next time!

It’s almost that time...
My wife and I have our anniversary today, then some family time Saturday and Sunday, and then starts my season for real.

I have just over 5 weeks off work as of today, and will be hunting 3-4 days a week for all 5. As luck would have it, day one for me starts with the first big cold front on Monday! And what a cold front it is... average daily highs for middle of October in Texas are low 80’s, and this front is pushing us to a HIGH of 45°. Hopefully it isn’t so drastic that they hunker down on me. Either way, it is better than upper 80’s!

Hunting a ridge that is miserable to get to. Steep, rocky, and laurel. Big buck or bust up here. It was torn up like crazy last year. Never hunted it before.

Jumped one low on the mountain. Sounded heavy but I couldn't see it. Fresh laurel rub below me, past day or three. This is looking good. They should be bedded below me and wind perfect.

Started a 3 day hunting trip this morning with 35° below average weather. Rain was coming in sideways, and it has been off and on all day. Had to escape to the warmth of the truck to try to dry off. It might only be 39°, but when you are soaked to the bone... it feels darn cold.

I knew I should have ponies up for the waterproof Sitka pants to go with the jacket I got last year.

I saw a couple does out on my way out, but the winds were swirling so bad they winded me not 15 yards into my stall.

Headed back in in about an hour, going 3 miles back in hopes of a buck. I won’t hesitate to shoot a doe, though... gotta get some points on the board, and I wouldn’t hate to have an excuse to drive home and run a load in the dryer.
