2019 Deer Contest Team 6 Discussion

I have 2 more weekends to try to get my remaining 5 points. Hoping my two boys crack one each too. My 15 year old has been digging the saddle this year!

Starting Saturday will be the last 4 days left for my season and the year. I hope to get my last 5 points or more. I apologize guys usually i have slammed my quota in the first few weeks.

Ended up getting down. Apparently my neighbor that was burning got some AR rounds from Santa...just wasnt meant to be. Figured this will be my last sit in the backyard. Had my trail cameras (3) soaking all season to get an idea of my propertys potential....only my second hunting season here. Had 90 deer on camera, only 8 during hunting hours, 1 buck and 7 does, 5 in the AM and 3 in PM. Not sure its really worth hunting back there as is. Unless someone could suggest some habitat changes or something to promote daytime movement. Something else that dug at me, last time I went in I missed a buck by 1 hr SMH. Anywho, off to public for my next round then all day new years eve if need be. Good luck to anyone still at it.

My backyard is similar. Full of deer til rut then they all go. I’m in suburbia tho. Off to the lease tonight for a hunt with my kids tomorrow and then next Friday and Saturday will be end of season so I have 3 days to get my doe points and freezer filled

How much property do you have? Sounds like you need some security cover and a good food source to increase daytime movement. And it’s anything like behind my house your Best bet is to stay out of there until the small window of the season they actually move during daylight. Basically first two weeks of November, maybe even the week before firearms opens might be the best for small parcels. Otherwise too easy to burn it with a sit or two in early season. When we could bait late season could produce if you started baiting after firearms. Could try something similar with a small kill plot. Same thing only hunt it once or twice a season during a peak movement window. Also could try some hinge cuts if it’s mostly timber. Hinge cut a bunch of trees in a 20-30 yard diameter area to make some good bedding. But unless you have security cover and a good source that’s probably what’s needed most to improve daytime movement.

Its about 5 acres wooded. My suspicion is they bed at my neighbors. My trees are more mature and open, his is younger and thicker. Ive thought about all kinds of stuff, planting rows of switchgrass to give visual protection/funnels for them to travel/bed, hinge cutting, planting some apple trees. I have no idea what is the most impactful and proper thing to do so I havent done anything yet. Not sure I want to get into plots, there would be a lot of clearing Id have to do to get to some sort of farmable ground unless its something you can just throw on the dirt and not till or anything. Picture isnt exactly correct on travel routes all the time. Still have 2 more cameras to roll through, but seems to be pretty consistent so far.

Alright guys im done for the year my season is up and apologize lol this was not my normal year but had fun anyhow. Usually im tagged out but it ended with 1 deer and two turkeys. Starting prep for 2020 1/1 need to rethink my strategies and evolve. Good luck to you all still out.

I'm probably tapped out too. With 20mph winds I didn't see squat today. Managed to fracture my hand/finger in the process so not going out tomorrow....more for the forecasted winds and temps than the hand, but find the missing knuckle...

Answer: left ring finger

Xrays should be posted tomorrow am haha

Congrats to anyone who submitted a deer for the mighty team 6 and good luck to anyone still hunting.

Been there done that. Sucks, but at least it was the end of the season and you’re doing something about it.

I broke the same bone on my right hand playing football. Hid it from everyone so I could keep playing, now I have a humped up metacarpal and the knuckle hangs way down
