2019: Public Land Challenge

Dan just did another video with Exodus trail cams and made some awesome buzz about the challenge.... not posting the entire video it’s too long.....but search for Dan Infalts Trail Camera Strategy For Hunting Mature Whitetails.

Yup watched that and both the "THP" public land challenge vid in the last few days.

I am hoping they cover all the hunters and their strategy. I think each can provide a different perspective on how they go about the hunt. All of them can offer most any hunter some sound strategies to employ from time to time. You'd be a fool IMO to try to argue that John E is not a MI slob slayer. Sturgis needs no intro the man has been slaying great bucks for decades. Dan, well most of us on this site know he has earned the title BBSK and gets it done. Joe R is a killer and especially for being so young - I enjoy his videos and he just works his rear end off to make it happen - much respect there. And to me, Andy May is the real deal. His approach just aligns with how I think and approach things and the dude has an unforgiving schedule and yet knocks down giants - consistently in different states. The Tether'd crew is just a good group of normal, everyday hunters that are changing the industry with truly innovative products.... I look forward to seeing how they take from this experience and refine/develop even new products that just flat out work.

There are some great hunters and I really hope they all bond and give each other the space and credit they deserve. i think Dan has started down that trail in the recent podcasts - its NOT about competition between whose style is best - its a personal challenge and each one of them brings a proven track record to the hunt and a unique twists on getting it done. I do hope that someone captures some of the comradery and campfire tactics discussions - not just the hunts themselves. These podcast and videos are such a gift to hunters these days - some of remember a time where no one shared anything and learning was a self-effort with years of trail and error. Lots of great info easily available these days.

I couldn't agree more @DaveT1963 I really like where this years public land challenge is going, and hope each individual with a you tube channel provides us with some around the fire footage back at base camp....I would be stoked if it took place in a state I hunted in with similar circumstances as far as pressure and deer density (exciting as it is for me) the guys on here that live and hunt in that part of Michigan...wow!

Man oh man I am pumped up about this challenge! The THP guys, and all the others joining in, are helping our community out so TREMENDOUSLY it’s insane. We need to make sure and support all these guys who are going to (and have already) freely shared so much information with the hunting community. One weekend in camp with this group of guys would supply a hunter with a lifetime of effective tactics. This year is going to be EPIC!!!!!

I'm really curious to see what an outsider's perspective is on hunting my home state. For John it's home turf so he'll provide some real great info for guys that are hunting here. I'm with others here in saying that I'm excited for the woodsmanship portion of the videos and strategy. Each one of these guys are master tacticians. Attention to detail and being 3 steps ahead of the deer is huge to shooting these giants.
For Dan and the other guys it's a whole new experience. There's a lot of good deer in the southern portion of the state but most of it is private land with parcels of state land that is PACKED with hunters. The northern part of the state is a little better but the deer density is way lower and the AG up north is nowhere near what it is downstate south of Clare. The UP is its own thing. Tons of state land, very little AG and VERY low deer density. There's some giants up there but they are few and far between. Not to mention that most of the state, a lot of guys shoot anything with antlers. Best option I would say is the swamps in the northern lower peninsula in the APR counties or maybe some areas just south of Clare in the AG(John Eberhart's back yard). I kind of hope they hunt the UP personally. I wish these guys all the best luck and can't wait to watch and learn.

Wish John was healthy to hunt, I think he said he was going to be game time decision on if he hunts. I've heard him say he wont let camera men go out with him because he doesn't trust their scent control, and he has no interest in self filming. It would be great to see his tactics in actual hunting scenarios.

How much better is the new breed of hunting videos. They concentrate on the method rather than the result. If you ask me the quality of content from hunting beast or THP or Budget Bucks is light years beyond the old standbys. How many "pros" do you know would document their attempts to hunt completely new public land and give themselves a week to figure out a plan and execute it. Pretty impressive if you ask me.

The older shows ran the same playbook over and over. Hunt on a "ranch" over a food plot. Come up with some rediculous name for the buck they saved for you. Run twenty minutes of stock footage and then que the music. When the dramatic music fades old stickers hits the dirt. Every week same thing.

New media has allowed the cream to rise to the top. These guys are willing to share their knowledge and the biggest factor is they have the knowledge!!! How many of the guys on the TV hunting shows would even consider stepping foot in public?? They pay to shoot an old goat on a farm usually. If you never harass a buck till he’s 5-6 I would think he’d be pretty easy to hunt. Hopefully it will eventually bring the price of hunting down as a side effect.

Great points! I cant wait to watch. The THP, THB, Hush Crew, Born and Raised etc. (so much good content out there) They have the secret sauce! They get after it, are funny as ever and teach what they know at the same time. I also love that they get their ad plugs in but don't beat you in the head with it! I stopped watching the TV stuff a long time ago...I call it hunting porn, 27 minutes of ads, 2 mins of action and then the $ shot...then you feel guilty for watching it :tearsofjoy:

I did learn one thing from the Primos videos. At Togo Island Hunt Club they proved that you can secure a singlewide 20' in the air on a metal platform. Parking your boat under your hunting camp could be the coolest thing I've ever seen.

You forgot to add in the plugs for all the products they used and thanking the companies while posing with said deer in the closing monologue. Also lots of fist pumping while scream whispering "SMOKED HIM!" It's deer hunting porn and an infomercial. I LOVE the way these youtube guys do hunting videos for regular guys and self filmed hunts that actually teach you something instead of trying to sell you something.

Well, it looks like John Eberhart spilled the beans on the most recent deer hunter podcast. Their camp will be at Waterloo State Rec Area. Rules are, it can’t be anywhere they’ve hunted before, they can’t get gps coordinators from outsiders, and they can drive up to 3 hours away but have to be able to return to camp that night. A 3 hour drive from Waterloo covers a huge chunk of lower Michigan. Soooo, basically they could be hunting almost anywhere.

Side note, I like the view point Dan has going into this, to teach ppl and for it to not be a competition. The way Eberhart spoke about it seemed to be a little bit competitive if you ask me. I guess it could be hard for it to not to be competitive doing something like this. It’s going to be awesome regardless.

Maybe I am misinterpreting the Challenge, but I had assumed it was not a competition but rather a group of guys challenging their abilities on public land and not challenging each other. If it is a competition that will be disappointing, I would really rather hunting not go that direction.

From the way I have heard them talk it’s not a heartless competition but a friendly competition. They share info and want everyone to succeed. The biggest challenge is everyone against the new public land not against each other.

Great I hope that is the case. That would be what they did last year and that is consistent with their content.

It sounds like they will be looking for a new location because of the cat getting out of the bag, according to a post from Dan over on the Beast.
