2021-2022 Duck Thread

EXTREMELY WELL!

I've been shooting 2 3/4" 1oz #7 super x steel at bluewings all season and will not be buying anything but that for teal going forward. Teal are "trusting" and I've never had too much problem getting them to commit to a spread. I usually toss 12-24 decoys with 1-4 spinners right in the middle. Furthest decoy is maybe 30 yards from where I hide. My hit rates went up when I started shooting a cylinder choke and smaller shot. A buddy of mine hand loads #8 bismuth and I can tell you I kill just as many or more birds as he does hunting side-by-side and don't really have cripples.

I've been impressed enough with their performance and cost (like $30-40 for 100) that I'm going to try them on wood ducks this year too. I duck hunted almost every morning last year and have made all but 3 mornings of teal since the 11th so I appreciate a cheaper (and easier-recoiling) load.
Glad to hear that! I usually use #5s for teal then bump up to #4s for big duck season so I’ve never tried the smaller shot sizes on any ducks. If I have the same results you’ve had, I’ll be stocking up as these shells were only $4 a box when I found them

They were $20 for 100 here before the last election. I usually shoot 4s but also have some 3s. I'm currently saving them to hopefully use on some Mississippi mallards.

Taking my dad out tomorrow. Don't have high hopes but whenever I take him I cook up breakfast. Y'all check this out:

Old aluminum fish poacher and a butane burner with built-in piezo ignition. $5 worth of crescent rolls and cocktail weiners gets you 2, 2 man breakfasts. Make em up the night before and cook for 10 minutes flipping every 30 seconds. They bake just like they do in the oven and go awesome with coffee from the ole Aladin Stanley thermos.

Best duck hunting gear I own.

Scratched a pair for my only hunt of the year.i highly enjoy killing waterfowl with the 28 gauge and my handloads. 5/8 oz #5 steel @1400fps. My preferred wood duck load as well.

I just need to find some ammo
No kidding. I saw 2 packs of the hevi bismuth at sportsman's the other day, but at $65 a pop I just couldn't do it. I've got enough old steel to last me for at least the first few weeks.

Big duck opener for me tomorrow. May have to leave the decoys at home...I ate so much I'm not sure the boat can handle all the weight.
Good luck. Maybe throw an extra life jacket in the boat for extra buoyancy. I can't make it till next weekend which gives my 8 days to lose my thanksgiving 15.

We have a short two day season starting tomorrow. I’ll be working though. Got to wait till main season on December 4.

Last Week Was pretty good here in mid mo Shot a 3 man on monday 3 man on thursday and 7 man on friday.

First successful duck hunt of the season for me. Should have had a limit but who cares about that. Little 28 gauge pop gun did well. Got a little timber hole lined out for Saturday if they stick around, gimme break out the .410 SxS123_1(5).jpg

The boat is finally ready after its most recent upgrade. I bought it new in 07. She's gone through a few different motors and mods. Added the bench/storage, had the back seat cut into a V. The blind frame was given to me and I bought the new/used cover last year....never been hunted. Had to rebuild the carb, but the 27 big block purrs now. Put a false floor in last night. Tomorrow we get it muddy.

Scouted this morning as the next phase opens this Saturday but it didn't look good. I saw a grand total of 4 ducks and they were a mile high obviously heading somewhere else. Needs some cold weather to push some birds down!
