2023 Hunt Plans?

Got the shipping notification for my K4 too!

Spring turkey and fall whitetails here in northern Va, and I may head out to the national forests on the west side of the state. Louisiana fishing trip the first week of June, then September elk if I draw NM or CO OTC…one or the other, but I’m going either way!

Don’t take it for granted. Talked to CO reps, and they told me they were directed to find a draw plan that doesn’t involve OTC in the next 2 seasons. There’s other 1-2 year options still. But Colorado is likely to no longer be a fallback plan.

Oh I entirely agree. There’s still going to be some great hunts to be had, but OTC is soon to be going away. For those that haven’t been building points in various states, I suggest you start! Trust me, I get the challenges. I’m a NR that started later than I should have. I know I’m going against a resident crew that, for the most part, doesn’t want me there…but here we are.

Be assured that residents do want nr hunters. I started the thread with a list of states I hunt and apply in. I get the frustration. A combination of bad game management, unlimited hunting and exploding resident hunters has really hurt the herd. We want non residents just not all of them. Even now in the meetings the commission only cares about the budget, not the animals. The governor’s husband is on the commission and is publicly anti hunting. It’s tough right now.
 
Maybe a deer hunt in Illinois if my buddy has an opening on his hunt.

Kansas/Nebraska for Rio and Merriams to finish my slam
Guided Elk in NW Co horseback
 
Mostly VA with the bow through the fall, but back to WI for rifle and the holiday hunt at the end of Dec if they hold it. If not, it will be the bow over Christmas.

Considering getting out for bears in VA during archery season. Don’t know much about it so it may turn into just a hike with my bow, but that’s alright.

seriously though if we don’t get another crap ton of hurricanes, I’m planning to go to Kentucky to deer hunt and maybe do the st Vincent island whitetail hunt (still fingers crossed for the sambar hunt)

Considering her recent upgrade, you should get to hunt more this year. ;)
 
I am now confirmed for attending the conference in GA in Oct so will be making a hunt over there after the conference. Leaning towards trying to make a MO trip too Since I am not elk hunting CO this year. The best window for my schedule though is the week following the GA trip. Not sure how the wife is going to react. She virtually never says anything about hunting but being gone 12 out of 15 days in a row added on to all the other local hunting may be a tougher than normal sale. May need to get her a new weedeater or something.
 
Well my plan wont change.
scout, scout, scout more until i find a spot or area with sign telling me “hunt here now”.
if not i keep scouting
