2023 Turkey Hunting Thread

It’s awesome if you have access to private in the valley, tons of birds. The Cherokee National is huge but mostly mountain, the birds are there but you’ll put some miles finding them. What area of TN did you hunt? I’m in Jonesborough near Johnson City.
I was near oneida! Actually came over that way towards Johnson city. Idr the town or hunting area I was on. It had elk! Maybe I suck but me and my buddies all sturggled

How was last year in Tennessee For you? I’m from Ohio. Came opening and the second weekend and heard maybe 2 gobbles. I had been to the same place the year before and it was a madhouse of turkey gobbling.
Same here in PA. The birds are still there but some yrs are quiet. Hear
Can any of you with the Carlson’s chokes post pics of your patterns and gauge/ shot size you use? Has anybody tried non tss loads with the Carlsons XR chokes and what shot size patterned the best? Also, who has tried bismuth loads out of these?
i never save targets I apologize. But shooting lead I like 6s with the Carlson choke. I never shot 5s to compare though. Never shot bismuth

Forgot I had these two pictures for those considering lonbeard XR in 20 gauge. Weatherby PA-459 threat response 18.5" bbl
Carlsons .575
30 yards was 160ish in the 10"
40 yards was 110ish in the 10".

I’m shooting an 870 too. What would you say is the distance and pattern difference between tss and the Winchesters?
I have both. I would say the tss gives you another 15yds of.... dead in the calsons longbeard choke (not sure if im supposed to shoot TSS through that choke but i do).
I mostly use tss now because i can run #9 and a wider choke. more pellets and a wider pattern gives you more wiggle room out to 40. Im not exactly jose wales with a shotgun.

I will say this. Biting into TSS vs lead is a world of difference on your molars while eating your bird haha. so keep that in mind with the long shots and wide patterns

I grew up in Erwin 20 minutes from JC. Actually FlagPond but no one knows where that is if not from there.

I was pricing out the TSS loads……. :fearscream::fearscream::fearscream: I watched Dave Owens last year formulate a load for his 20 deadly on turkeys…. I can probably almost get everything I would need like an MEK single stage press and components for the price of 6 boxes of TSS or 30 loads! Has anybody done this?

No but I like your thought!

I load my own shells and the regular shotshell components are not the issue. It is the TSS itself. You won't save any money, just have the satisfaction of loading your own.

I usually shoot one turkey a year and have shot two one year. I spend way more on gasoline driving out to hunt than on tss shells, even at $15.00 a shot.

Now, if you are going to do one of those Argentina dove shoots with tss....

got my new turkey vest from xop
The vest is made by xop and is very similar to my striker pack that i absolutely loved this passed year
here is the link for this vest
xop turkey vest
for 69.00$ you cant beat that
im super excited to get back into the turkey game after nearly a decade away from it
May 1st will be my opener so wish me luck and everyone please be safe.
let get out and get those gobblers

You buy it by the pound and that sounds about right. It's been a few years. I got it from a guy on the Tungsten Supershots forum but most importantly I got pressure tested load data to go along with it. If you bought from him, he would give you the data but ask that you not share it.

That's Hal Abbot, hawglips on internet forums.

Tommy Dulbia is another trusted seller with load data, Toasty on most forums if I remember correctly. All the ammo from foxtrot ammunition are Tommy's loads

Did you price in the TSS itself? last time i did the math it was about the same plus labor and cussing when i screw it up. TSS loads have gone up in the last couple years though. a box used to be $50 for 12 ga 3"
