2025 Turkey Season

Had a bad luck sorta morning Saturday but finally closed the deal. Birds didn’t gobble well on the limb. Was moving in on a bird that didn’t gobble until 6 am and bumped a group of deer that proceeded to run right under him snorting and carrying on. Finally struck another one about 9:20 and need to make a move to get around in front. Was about 10 steps from where I was going to call from and bumped another group of deer that ran right straight towards where the turkeys were. Lots of birds gobbling Thursday morning when I couldn’t hunt.

Purty country to kill a gobbler in!

Congrats! Nice bird.

Only report I have gotten today was crickets so you arent alone.
I hate to hear that, I hoped someone was getting some turkey action. Everybody I know here is struggling, and most of them have leased private land to hunt. The birds are just acting stupid again this year. We said it was bad last year and I has to be better next year. We were wrong.

With our season starting this Saturday, I've been hard at work trying to locate birds. As per the usual for me, looks like another ugly season coming up.
It's staggering to me how much our bird population has collapsed. You will certainly find pockets of them usually on private around the fields. Even our 1k hunting club has just 1 gobbler on it it seems.

I'll keep trying but man my neck of the woods blows for turkey hunting.

It's been a fun but unproductive year so far this year that has left the turkey's up 3-0.

@Bigterp came up opening weekend to hunt with me and my dad (and to pick up a gorgeous new recurve). Opening morning found every parking spot full so we went to an overlooked area on the opposite side of the road from most of the pressure. We heard a few birds on roost but they were on private. We hunted out the ridge and decided to set up and call a little in an area that had some fresh sign. 20 minutes later I watched a long beard walk less than 30 yards from my dad. Apparently his "eyes got a little heavy" while he was sitting there. :)

Then last Friday dad called in a gorgeous Tom for me and I proceeded to miss him at 7 steps with my recurve. Put the biggest whitetail you can imagine in front of me and I will hold it together until after the shot but, for some reason I struggle to keep it together with my bow in my hand and a turkey in front of me. We then called in another Tom 30 minutes later and he caught me drawing and took off before I got a shot.

I took the shotgun out the next morning to hopefully get over the sting of missing one at 7 steps with my bow but, we never heard a bird. We'll be back at it this coming weekend to try to catch up some on the score.

Blessed to be able to even try for an Oregon bird. Got lucky and had one responding this morning to the wingbone but went cold. It was a beautiful 5 mile 1600 ft ascent hike up in the Ochoco mountains; albeit rainy. Low bird population here but two more days to try and get it done. Regardless of a bird I’m soaking up the experience.

Spent a few April mornings on my belly, shoulders rocking with silent laughter, watching a pasture while a buddy turkey-called does behind us to the skinny treeline ...

Well. that's a wrap for the 2025 Mississippi Turkey season for me. It ended just like the 2024 season with no birds killed. I went 12 days, and I heard a total of 2 jake gobbles and 2 "adult gobbles". Never saw a gobbler. I saw maybe half a dozen hens, all told, and no jakes.

My friends haven't fared much better here and most have made multiple trips out of state this year to get birds.

I doubt I do much turkey hunting next year, since they have been so bad and I plan to focus my attention on hog hunting instead. It'll take several locals I know and trust telling me the birds are absolutely setting the woods on fire for me to get interested in turkeys after the last two seasons I've had.

It did save me some money though. I had a powerful desire to buy a turkey gun I saw last week. I've talked myself out of it. What do I need another one for when the one I have isn't getting used?

Man, I hope you guys whose season is just about to start have better luck that we have here in MS.

Same boat on the turkey gun. Having used a SP 10 mag for years I thought it'd be really fun to tote around a super liten.410. something like the TriStar g2 turkey special.

Then it hits me there's zero reason to buy it as there's no turkeys to kill

An upgraded turkey gun might go a long ways towards changing your luck. Off to the support thread you go now.

I wanted one of the Mossberg over under turkey guns they have now. It is all camo, 20 inch barrels and set up for nonexistent turkeys.

I like the idea of having 2 barrels, one choked for TSS to reach out there if they hang up and the other barrel choked looser for lead shot for those close in shots. Just choose whichever barrel is appropriate.

Maybe in a couple of years if they get their act together next season. I just can't see spending the money if the season is awful.

Turkey hunting is not for everyone.

Sometimes the birds don't cooperate, or you just ain't where they am.

And also--While I'm at it, I might as well just blurt it out--Let me say: The game is only getting started at 50 yards ... It's fixin' to get serious at 40... LOL

Gobblers ain't easy.

Turkeys made a big comeback in places where they'd vanished. Hunting Incorporated hyped it up and "hunters" got spoiled.

The turkey abundance warning signs/trouble-spots can be traced back even into the restoration years, which ended in 2004 or thereabouts.

There is a habitat problem, and it's not being addressed.

Turkeys need good nesting cover and brood ground, and what's being pushed as attractive for deer habitat is not necessarily good for turkeys, and can be very good for predators.

So put *that* in yer pipes and smoke it.
