2026 Saddlehunter Deer Contest Hype Thread

For what its worth, @redsquirrel is one of the most consistent points getter/killer in the contest . . . right behind his dad. I don't think that would be considered a step down. :tearsofjoy:

It's not about the points @redsquirrel brings. It's the strokes of bad luck that befall his teammates that keep them from scoring. I have the literal scar on my string hand pointer finger to prove it. :grimacing:

We need to start a curse of the squirrel support group. Ive been on his team the last two years and it's crazy how things just dont quite work out. I killed some good critters last year but it's always something. All three good bucks I killed, for this reason or that I wasn't in the saddle when I got an opportunity. It was like the second I wasn't tethered in, here he is. Hang all day, nothin or no shot, etc. Decide not to hang and slip out to a field for the evening real quick, there he is. Can't say I have physical scars from it but the mental anguish is real. I even had to kill a doe with a rifle out of the saddle just to make sure I got my second entry.

We need to put him on a team that can't lose so the curse can be broken.

Last year was the first contest year I'd missed in several years, and In 20 seasons of bowhunting it was by far my best year! I'm debating whether to sign up or not and hopefully keep the streak from last year going. I tagged 2 bucks and a doe in 7 hunts and called it a season.

Im sure you would. We'd all love to play with a stacked deck. Maybe we should take your lowest scoring member out and put the head squirrel in his place. Then we could find out if the curse is real or not.
I welcome this challenge. Bring it. @redsquirrel gonna shoot a couple good bucks out the office window every year and we will straight take those points.

Sounds just like me last year. I had been on the winning team something like 4 of the 5 previous years. I KNEW last year was going to be the year that the @redsquirrel curse was broken. Next thing I know, before I even had a chance to hunt whitetail, I'm sitting on a mountaintop in CO with the end of my finger hanging off. :tearsofjoy:

How’d I miss this??? Dang it, swing-n-fling, THIS is a genius idea!!!! If it wouldn’t be such a waste of a dang fine member I would recommend you for MCS (Moderator Candidate School)!

We need to make this happen, lol.

So as long as we stay out of CO, we should be good?

There are a lot of reasons to stay out of CO these days, the squirrel curse being low on the list.

On the bright, side I ended up getting a muzzle buck tag yesterday. Stoke for the front side of the contest had changed. Grouse season starts the 1st so that gives me 2 weeks to go scout for a mulie that I can give the ol smoke pole treatment to out of a tree. Those things are so aloof on public its hard to get em out of a tree but Ill give it go for the first few days at least. That's another reason to stay out of CO. Aside from archery, seasons are short. Only get 9 days with the muzzle.

I think I'd rather lose the end of my finger every year then give up elk hunting. lol
Lots of other places to hunt elk than CO. WY and ID are great places to be.

I buy my WY preference point every year, currently at 5. By the time I draw this tag it will probably take 10 years to draw another. I know there are cow hunts I could draw every year in WY but, at least right now CO is the only place I know that I can draw a bull tag every year.
