I have been running 4 cut down lone wolf sticks (15” step to step) but am considering going over to 3 20” beast sticks (20” step to step). If my math is correct I should technically be able to climb to the same height with either set up. Any pros or cons to switching up or staying the same? Thanks

The Beast sticks look really nice. My guess is you would get some weight and bulk savings going to 3 over 4 sticks. Have you tried an aider on the bottom stick with only 3 of the Lone Wolf sticks. It might be worth a try and save you some money and allow you to use 3 of the sticks you already have.

4th stick? She gone!

some people are throwing out some really good points. Dang, this is tough.

you'll get higher on 4 sticks

i find 3 sticks too limiting, especially on twisty trees

here's the my math on this

i'll assume you can step 20 inches, and i'll neglect a 20" step from top stick to platform, since that can be tagged on the end and doesn't vary

(15+20)*4/12 = 11.67 feet

(20+20)*3/12 = 10 feet

i would run a 1 step aider on each, increasing your step separation to 40 inches

(15+40)*4/12 = 18.33 feet

(20+40)*3/12 =15 feet

you can see that an aider really helps

then add 1.67 feet (=20 inch step from top stick to platform) to all numbers above to get distance to platform

I have been using 3 20" sticks for a while now with a moveable aider. Probably going to try out a versa aider this season. In my opinion 3 sticks is the way to go. Hang first stick from ground. Hang strap from second stick on top step of 1st stick and lean 2nd stick against tree. Hang 3rd stick from saddle. Have even leaned 2nd stick against tree and stood on top step to hang 1st stick. 4 sticks and the two clank together too often hanging from saddle.

Thinking hard about keeping the 4 sticks and buying a 18” versa aider.

I run 4 cut down novix sticks (18 inch sticks)

i run a 2 step amsteel aider on the bottom stick (15 inch steps). The other three have a 16 inch cable aider. At 20 feet without over stretching in 6 min.

If I climbed telephone poles I’d run 3 full length sticks with a one step aider on each. On trees that aren’t perfect the cut downs are way handier
My thoughts as well. Relying on long sticks and especially aiders requires a straight tree to get full use of them.
