Who here uses a 35 whelen? Picked up a CVA a few days ago and just curious what everyone’s experience with this cartridge is. Any bullet recommendations? Has anyone shot this round past 150 yards and if so how far does the bullet drop?

I’ve shot several rifles in 35 Whelen. Trajectory isn’t all that different than a 308 inside 300 yards.

I think the Old whelen is a powerful mid range cartridge but could be a handful in the cva.

It’s the only rifle i own beside a muzzleloader. I shot a 200 grain out of mine. I will drop them in the tracks.

Do you have an estimate of the drop when zeroed at 100 yards? All charts I find are for a 200 yard zero
Berger bullets has an excellent website with a free ballistics calculator that is spot on, if you know your bullet for sure, get all the specs for it off whoevers webpage makes it, plug that into the berger ballistics calculator along with your speed if you know it, and your done. It’s pretty neat, if your not into this type of stuff give me your bullet weight and type and I can try and help!

I do not. But when I owned one years ago, I zeroed dead nuts at 100 yds, saw 2" drop at 200 yds.
The only way, the only way, the only way to know your drops is to shoot the round at all distances in 100 yd increments to your max range.
I have a 4570 lever action thats supposed to drop 10" at 200 yds with a 100 yd zero. It drops 4".
I never trust published ballistics. I shoot to range and note.. it takes time, but its the only way to know for sure.
And buy your ammo in lots of 200 so its all made the same day, the same way. Unless of course you reload.

^^^^ Because there is a million factors at play, I still like the calculator for a good starting point, but yes shooting is the only true way to know, also under the same temp and elevation one will be hunting at, as I am sure you know!
