What are you DIY'rs using for a fid on splicing 7/64 amsteel daisy chains? I have some brass fids that are made for paracord, wondering if they will work.

I can't find a 1/8 or 7/64 fid anywhere online that I've looked.

dont use a fid, just a nail filed smooth as to not snag the fibers and a piece of floral wire

I was at Wal**** and had a set of 3 different sized knitting needles in my cart for $7 but put them back. I remembered a video where I think @g2outdoors spliced Amsteel with a ballpoint pen. The nail and wire is a good idea.

Go to a craft store like Michaels or Joann fabrics and buy a set of aluminum knitting needles for about 5 bucks and cut them with a hacksaw and smoot them with a file or emory cloth

I used the nock end of a 1/4" alum. arrow about 6" long 45 degree angle on the cut smoothed it up with wet an dry, works very well, for the lock, small SS wire for the bury, 7/64 is tricky on the bury, really helps to taper the bury, I cut 3 strands about an inch long for the taper.

Many good ideas above. Definitely taper before the bury. I do 4 strands for 7/64” since it’s 8 strand. Anything 1/8” or bigger, I taper 6 strands since it jumps up,to a 12 strand rope at that point. I usually just use copper wire folded over to bury. The Samson splicing fids are nice for doing all the brummels for the daisy chain. Makes the job go quickly.

Purple sized aluminum knitting needles at walmart cut to 3 or 4 inches and sharp edges filed down inside and outside (from cut) works well for 1/8", haven't tried on 7/64". I wrap the tag end of amsteel with masking tape so that the end goes in and out of the fid easily without fraying the end up. I don't try to keep the amsteel in the fid the whole time. I push the fid in where necessary, find the correct taped tag end, put that inside the fid, and then push through, remove fid and then pull on tag end.

You really don’t need 1/8 or 7/64 did to work with 7/64 Amsteel. I generally use a 5/16 fid for the locked Brummell and either Cooper wire or a latch needle for the bury.

These seem redonkulously expensive till you use one and realize you can work with tiny Amsteel without making up new curse words. I resisted till I realized the dog kept leaving the shop every time I tried making something with the stuff.
Taper the end of the piece you are threading then capture it in the bend of the fid. Slides right through easy peasy. On a cost-per-use basis, I'm at less than 50 cents each by now.
