A Few Tips From An Old Fart

Sounds painful. why don’t you just press your sneeze button. That groove between the base of your nose and your upper lip. Hold it till your sneeze goes away
That too.
But there's no pain involved in what I suggested.
I've had allergies for almost 50 years. Took me a long time to learn how to resist a sneeze but doing so really minimizes a flare up.
The key is to recognize the 1st sign of a sneeze coming on and dont give in to it.

Thanks for all the tips, first priority is running an air filter and keeping my place more dust free. I'm pretty good usually, but when that temperature drops my nose starts running bad enough that it causes me to cough once per hour. With the hand towel, I can bury my face and let go with some deep coughs without worrying (and those deep coughs stop the urge for a while).

I was using a neti pot everyday and that really helped. I need to start that back up. Ever try it?

How thoughtful, careful, and detail oriented are you?

I imagine swimming in the creek would be extremely hazardous. Maybe even breathing in public.

When I swim in a creek, I don’t purposely suck the water in through my nose. I’m sure that sucking in your shower water is less hazardous, but why would you? Distilled water is cheap. Neti pots are cheap.

there is that bacteria (edit: amoeba) from swimming in swamps that eats your brain

I’ve had my head underwater in soup that would not be recognized by most outdoorsman as “water”. I grew up with a literal leash when in a boat because my dad couldn’t keep me from swimming.

you’re missing the point. This is the math problem we keep going back to. I’m not advocating living In a bubble. I’m recommending to think in terms of markets or tradeoffs. What’s the upside of purposely sucking dirty water into your sinuses? Is that upside worth increasing the denominator in a fraction where the numerator is death by brain eating amoeba?

People die in south Florida because they swim in 110* stagnant pond water. I don’t recommend they don’t swim. I’m just saying, maybe take a 20 minute drive to the beach, or closest river.

people die because they purposely flood their sinuses with a device or fluid that has deadly critters in and on it. I’m not saying don’t have clean sinuses. I’m just thinking there are other methods to accomplish the same end result, without introducing that risk.

tradeoffs.

upside.

short/long positions.

I would prefer to reduce fat tail risks, which enable me to take more small risks and increase productivity/enjoyment of my life.

But I guess, if you want to keep sticking things up your nose, I’m not here to stop ya brother.

If you are using well water then I agree. The water I use is chlorinated by the local water company. I wouldn't suck swamp water into my sinuses in any case. I used to scuba dive and surf and I've had a lot of salt and fresh water in my sinuses and am still alive. Maybe I am lucky.

I don't know why anybody would suck up water in they nose to begins with.... I have never heard of this before in my life....u guys are weird

Honestly, once you get used to it, it is super refreshing. Ever noticed how if you are at the beach all day swimming that it really clears your sinuses? It's like that (you use salt water)...I guess a better comparison is similar to cleaning eyes out with saline solution....but inside your head. Maybe I need a head enema more than some.....

I knew of the amoeba risk (said bacteria before, I was confused....maybe the amoeba got me) and so I always used distilled water and washed the thing in a dishwasher.

If you use chlorinated tap water in a neti pot, it'll burn like crazy. You have to use these little packets or kosher salt that is not iodized (to make it about like saline solution) and then use bottled water.

It's to get the welding spatter out of there. :mask:

A few times I have welded for 4 or 5 hours with a helmet only, no breathing protection. When I took a shower and washed my sinuses actual visible dirt came out. Most times there is nothing visible. Welding may be the dirtiest job I have ever done.

What in the hell are you guys talking about?? I thought it was “tips from a old fart” not debating sucking water up your nose.

If you wash many parts of your body, why not wash the area that filters out the most crap from the air? Leaving that crap in there is not good, IMHO. There is a joke here somewhere but I will leave the setup for another jokester. :mask:
