I really am a big fan of buy once cry once, but for a variety of reasons, I’m not situated to spend the $3-500 it looks like I’d need for a commercial readymade saddle plus ropes, ascenders, platform, etc.

So, first question: is a total DIY a bad idea for a beginner?

As long as its not, what’s the least expensive way I could get into a fully huntable saddle setup? I’ve already got WEStepps, and I’ve got a decent Muddy harness with a lineman’s belt on it, but that’s it.

Finally, I’m new to the forums, so if this is already asked and answered elsewhere, please point me to it. I won’t be surprised; y’all seem to have thought of everything.

If you have WE steps you already have a really good platform.

A sitdrag, rock climbing harness, and ropes could be had for $100

There’s info here. Check the newbie section and other sit drag threads.

You could use your harness a $25 sitdrag a couple of ropes, carabiners and rock on! Have probably $50-$75 all in to sit in!
Or
A piece of fleece would be like $3

I had less than $100 in my DIY saddle setup last year. Decided to invest in a commercial option this year because I enjoyed it so much. DIY is an excellent option if you are on the fence. Best of luck!

Fully agree, except skip the sitdrag and get the fleece!

Do you have access to a sewing machine?, if so then follow one of the kestrel clone saddle builds and have a really good set up for not much money, just go slowly and do the correct stitches and you will be good, stay safe, regards wayne

Whay Wayne r said. This is my first year in. I bought enough material to build two saddles for under $80.00. Helps to have a good sewing machine.

Alrighty. Thanks y’all. Imma try a combo of fleece and webbing, and I’ll see if I can’t post some pics of results.
