Adding Cleat to Helium Climbing stick

Hi All.
This forum is amazing! I have been saddle hunting for two years and this forum has been an amazing source of info! Thank you!

i am installing a clam cleat on my helium sticks and not clear where the best location. It looks like Muddy’s are 13.5 inches from the bottom of the stick to the center of the rope. I was a little nervous to drill so close to the versa button hole.
Any insight is appreciated.

I attached right below the versa button so close that it traps the rope onto the versa button I tied to with figure 8 knot. I didn't measure just used the template. Just like the photo above by shootermike

Thanks! I ended up taking the versa button off and installing the cam cleat. It worked great but I am a little concerned about the screw and bolt system I had to use as it was only 2 10-32 x2 1/2” screws. That looks like the largest screw that will fit through the harken. Considering boring out the cam cleat red center to accommodate a larger screw.
Appreciate the thoughts!!!

When I am climbing, I will wrap the tag end over the top step. It’s out of the way and when I pull up my stick, it’s easier to grab…..I don’t mind stepping on it either.

I would not bore out the cam cleat! You’re good! The angles and pressure on that thing are so indirect, it’s going no where! When you disconnect your rope/cord whatever, to move stick, I find it beneficial to pull the rope through the cleat just a touch, then sideways. If you try to pull it straight out the side, it won’t be as friendly…..you’ll see

That’s just purdy right there! Nice stick! Once that rope goes through the cleat I don’t know that you need to tie up the tail end too much. In fact, I lay mine over the top step from the backside, just once so it’s easier to grab. Speaking of “easier to grab”, have you put a giant gear tie on top yet?

If I ever add cam cleats to a stick (happy with muddy pros), that is exactly how I plan on attaching the rope. No need for extra holes in the stick and even pressure above and below the cam cleat.
And I just might change mine! Love that! It’s so simple even I could do it!

Cut down my 30" hawk helium to just under 17" and added a cam cleat and 2 step aider to use as a one stick. I used 5mm x 60mm stainless steel machine screws with lock nuts. I have some 12.9 grade bolts on order but put these on to put it together.
My cam cleat is the ronstan medium. I made the 2 step aider out of 1/8 amsteel. I put a little bungee cord in the middle of the cam cleat to silence it. I'm using 6mm Sterling accessory cord for the rope.Screenshot_20221107-085902_Gallery.jpgScreenshot_20221107-085913_Gallery.jpgScreenshot_20221107-085854_Gallery.jpg
