Adult Bolts?

I don’t think anyone is saying that they are looking for the forward shot but that they just want to feel confident if they have to take it and that the shot is lethal. No one wants to lose their animal.

Wouldn't these heavy bolts be more appropriate for elephant?
Yea. Same with a 30 .06... but i know plenty of guys that use one for deer and its no big deal. But for archery they need a 410gn arrow out of 73lb bow

U can kill a "bad guy" with a .22 but I'd rather have a .44 magnum if I had both in front of me.

Keep using "just enough" to get the job done if you want. Doesnt matter to me. It works... Most of the time.

Not to be "that guy" but like @Nutterbuster said crossbows produce enough energy to blow through a deer.. Taking more ethical shots with an off the shelf crossbow will get you further than trying to beef up any bolt. Wait for a quarter away shot or broadside. That's just my .2 cents.

Its not a matter of taking ethical shots. A 70lb compound bow will produce enough energy to blow through as well. Its about what happens when your shot goes wrong... or your perfect and this is just impossible and will never ever happen. Im not taking a front shot on a whitetail no way

Has anyone jumped on the bandwagon with crossbow bolts/broadheads? I wonder if it matters with the speeds crossbows shoot. Anyone know of weights or collars that are the right diameter for bolts? I'm shooting 0.348 OD centerpunch bolts.
I have had nothing but pass throughs with crossbow, even when it gets both shoulders, its a pass through and than it even buries itself in the dirt. I do not think it is needed

I get dialed in at about 442 grains with 18" Black Eagle Executioner arrows, 110 gr. brass inserts and Blazer vanes, and 150gr Excalibur Bolt Cutters. Shooting about 340fps from an Excalibur Matrix 380. I zero dead nuts at 20 yds, hit 4" low at 30yds, and about 10" low at 40yds. I'm very reluctant to shoot past 30yds, but not saying I won't or haven't.

I got a bear hunt coming up next spring in Manitoba (which was cancelled this year due to Covid). I will be shooting 18" Easton FMJs with the 110 inserts and the 150 Boltcutters weighing in at 555grains. The shot will be 20-25 yds max. I'm told. Don't really need the extra weight for this on Black bears but I had fun building the arrows over the winter. I haven't chronographed this set up yet.

I have a Scorpyd Nemesis 480. It shoots a black eagle executioner 22” with a brass insert. Use 100 grain Swhacker. Chrono reading in set up to hunt is 467! I’ve shoot 1 buck out of state and some does back home. My wife has killed a local buck and doe as well. We’ve recovered 1 arrow. Deer don’t even know they’re hit and it shoots like a rifle. I have personally killed to 60 yds with it and passed through with no luck finding that arrow either. You don’t need the weight with enough speed and sharpness. And yes that includes going through shoulders. Make good shots.

60 yds ranged. Exit side showing deer trotted maybe 20 yds with entry side shoulder busted. Stopped to look at what bit him lol and fell over. Arrow buried up past nock and I couldn’t find it.

Personally, ive never had a bolt not blow through and bury itself in the dirt. Mature deer or not, they have all had clean passes. Last years buck, clipped the entry shoulder at the top (close five yard shot from 20’ high) and blew threw the opposite shoulder. Was a 3 1/2 year old eight point. Bolt buried itself far enough in the dirt that i vould find the bolt even with a light nock, had to scrape an in h of dirt and leaves off the ground to find it. And i use 100 gr muzzy 3 point fixed blades

Heavy arrows, I'm sorry "adult" arrows, are the ticket if you plan on longer than average 20-30 yd shots (on whitetails), no other advantage inside 30yds if you're FOC is good along with sound shot placement. I made up some 600+ grainers for a black bear hunt and laughed at myself the entire time I was building them. The shot will be 20-25 yds and my standard deer set up is more than good for that. But it was fun. Now if I can just get a buffalo hunt lined up so I can put those 600s to good use. Go on the excalibur forum and see the arrow Bill T completely penetrated an elephant with. 60" of penetration

Those of you building heavy bolts, can they not be underspend?
