I am going to try the one stick climbing method. How many aider steps do you all use for one sticking? And why?

I’m not a big fan of aiders to begin with but I do think they are almost a necessity with 1 sticking. Personally I like just 1 step aiders. Smaller, less to deal with and the least amount of shakiness/instability climbing up them.

I am 5’4” tall and I use a three step aider with each step 13-14”. This helps me when I set my tether and grab my stick. When I place my stick for my next transition the 3 step aided hangs 36-39” from the bottom of my stick. When I push away from the tree the length of my aider helps me get my foot in the bottom step and up I go.

I run a single aider on a two step stick with 20" step spacing. Works well for me for one-sticking.

I think it all depends on your physical ability and balance....using a 16" climbing stick i use a 3 step and when using my stirrups it's a 4 step. I got good balance and athletic ability so I want each set of whatever climbing anchor point to be as high as I can reach. 2 moves are roughly 12-14 feet and that's usually good with as much cover as we have
